Selected in the fourth round of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft by St. Louis, Handzus skated in 1009 career games with the Blues, Coyotes, Flyers, Blackhawks, Kings and Sharks. A consistent 20-goal scorer until late in his career, Handzus' best season was in 2003-04 with Philadelphia when he had 58 points in the regular season. A solid playoff performer - he had 11 points during the Blackhawks playoff run - Handzus finished his NHL career with 185 regular season goals and 483 points.

After leaving the NHL following the 2013-14 season, Handzus returned to his hometown team and led HC´05 Banská Bystrica to the Extraliga Championship in 2017. Along with countryman Miroslav Satan, Handzus is only one of two Slovakian hockey players who have won a Stanley Cup, a World Championship (2002), and an Extraliga championship.
