The six teams at the Spengler Cup are split into two groups. The groups are always titled Group Torriani and Group Cattini, named after Bibi Torriani and Hans Cattini, two key figures in Swiss hockey history.
The teams each play the other clubs in their group once during the group stage. After that, the top teams from each group get a bye to the semifinals. The No. 2 team from Torriani plays the No. 3 team from Cattini, and vice versa. The winners advance to the semifinals, and the semifinal winners play in the final.
