For the third time in CHL history, the Quebec Remparts are Memorial Cup champions.

The Remparts shut out the Seattle Thunderbirds 5-0 in the 2023 Memorial Cup final Sunday night in Kamloops, B.C. William Rousseau stopped all 32 shots he faced as Patrick Roy's club earned its first Memorial Cup title since 2006.

Vsevolod Komarov opened the scoring in the first period and James Malatesta doubled Quebec's lead in the second. The Remparts pulled away in the third period with goals from Kassim Gaudet, Zachary Bolduc and Charles Savoie.

Malatesta was named Memorial Cup MVP for his five goals in four games at the tournament.

WHL champion Seattle struggled to generate offense against a stingy Quebec defense. The Thunderbirds' top line of Dylan Guenther, Brad Lambert and Reid Schaefer was shut down for most of the night. It was only the second time in 955 games this season that Seattle failed to score a single goal in a game.

With Quebec's victory, a QMJHL team now won seven of the past 11 Memorial Cups.

The Sporting News provided updates and highlights from the 2023 Memorial Cup final between the Quebec Remparts and the Seattle Thunderbirds.

Quebec vs. Seattle live updates, highlights from 2023 Memorial Cup final

Final: Quebec 5, Seattle 0

9:51 p.m.: The Quebec Remparts are your 2023 Memorial Cup champions, shutting out the Seattle Thunderbirds. Quebec pulled away with three goals in the final frame, while goaltender William Rousseau was stellar in net. It's the third Memorial Cup in Quebec franchise history.

9:48 p.m.: GOAL! Quebec adds another for good measure as Charles Savoie beats Thomas Milic under the right arm. It was another 2 on 1 allowed by Seattle, and the shot is one that Milic is going to want back. It's a five-goal game with 2:05 to go. Quebec 5, Seattle 0.

9:46 p.m.: The call on the ice stands, no goal. Seattle still hasn't cracked William Rousseau tonight.

9:44 p.m.: Seconds after the Bolduc goal, Kevin Korchinski and the Thunderbirds think they finally have a goal. The Seattle defenseman tried a wrap-around attempt on William Rousseau, who got a toe on the puck, but the puck may have crossed the goal line. The officials are going to review the play.

9:42 p.m.: GOAL! There's the dagger for the Remparts, as Zachary Bolduc rips a one-timer past Milic with 4:04 to go. Quebec had been trying all game to set up Bolduc for the slap shot on his off wing, and the team finally comes through on their sixth power play attempt. Quebec 4, Seattle 0.

9:39 p.m.: The frustration on the Seattle side is starting to boil over. Dylan Guenther takes exception to a hit from Quebec's Evan Nause and cross-checks him behind the play. The Remparts will head to their sixth power play with 4:36 to go.

9:36 p.m.: Out of the box comes Huchette. That was not at all the power play Seattle was hoping for.

9:35 p.m.: GOAL! Kassim Gaudet extends Quebec's lead to three, scoring shorthanded on a 2 on 1 with 7:39 to go. Some added insurance for the Remparts, but an absolutely back-breaking goal for the Thunderbirds to allow while on the power play. Quebec, 3 Seattle 0.

9:33 p.m.: A massive opportunity here for the Thunderbirds with less than nine minutes to go as Quebec's Mikael Huchette cross-checks Seattle's Jordan Gustafson down low in the Seattle zone. The Thunderbirds couldn't capitalize on their only other PP in the game, but get one here when they need it most.

9:28 p.m.: Another big save from Thomas Milic as he turns away a Nathan Gaucher attempt on a 2 on 1. The clock is ticking down for Seattle, who have yet to have a big push. There's less than 10 minutes to go in the contest.

9:27 p.m.: The Remparts nearly made it 3-0 as Justin Robidas whacks a puck in the air off the cross bar.

9:21 p.m.: Quebec isn't taking the foot off the gas. Patrick Roy's club is still relentless on the forecheck and are getting shots on Thomas Milic. We'll see if the Remparts start to hang back a bit more and play defensive as the period goes on.

9:17 p.m.: Quebec's James Malatesta continues to be the team's best player. He had another chance with a snap shot from distance that Thomas Milic fought off, and then he laid a hard hit on Seattle's Nico Myatovic near the Thunderbirds' bench.

9:13 p.m.: The final period of regulation in the 2022-23 CHL season is underway. Quebec is 20 minutes away from the club's third Memorial Cup.

End of the second period: Quebec 2, Seattle 0

8:53 p.m.: James Malatesta's lone tally in the second period gives Quebec a two-goal lead heading into the final 20 minutes. The Remparts have done an exceptional job of clogging the neutral zone and making it hard for the Thunderbirds to enter the offensive zone. It's been a quiet night for Seattle's Dylan Guenther and Brad Lambert, two of their top scorers.

8:51 p.m.: Jordan Gustfason gets a couple of whacks at a loose puck around the crease for the Thunderbirds, but William Rousseau stands tall again for the Remparts. He's stopped all 21 shots he faced so far.

8:44 p.m.: Quebec can't come through on the power play so it's back to even strength with about 4:30 left in the period. Theo Rochette clanged the post on a shot, but it wouldn't go for the Remparts. Sawyer Mylio had two blocked shots for Seattle on that PK.

8:42 p.m.: Jeremy Hanzel is out of the box for Seattle, so it's a 5 on 4 power play for Quebec for roughly a minute and a half.

8:40 p.m.: Reid Schaefer tries to clear the puck down the ice on the PK for Seattle, but it goes directly out of play and he'll sit for delay of game. Quebec gets a 5 on 3 power play for 31 seconds. That's a bad penalty by Schaefer.

8:38 p.m.: Quebec is heading to another power play as Jeremy Hanzel high-sticks James Malatesta in the face. It's the fourth PP for the Remparts tonight, they are 0-for-3 so far.

8:30 p.m.: GOAL! Seconds after his failed breakaway, James Malatesta doubles the Quebec lead. That was slick passing play from Vsevolod Komarov and Theo Rochette to find Malatesta in the slot for the one-timer. That's Malatesta's fifth goal of the tournament and it comes 8:50 into the second. Quebec 2, Seattle 0.

8:30 p.m.: A big stop by Milic for Seattle as he stops a James Malatesta breakaway.

8:29 p.m.: Quebec's Kassim Gaudet lays a big hit on Seattle's Kevin Korchinski, much to the displeasure of the Thunderbirds. Gaudet gets called for boarding, but Gracyn Sawchyn also is called for roughing so it'll be 4 on 4.

8:20 p.m.: Seattle had a shift where it was in the Quebec zone for at least a minute, but the Thunderbirds are still looking for that first goal. Kyle Crnkovic had the best chance, as he was open down low at the side of the net, but his spin-around shot missed high.

8:14 p.m.: It's back to 5 on 5 with Reid Schaefer and James Malatesta out of the box.

8:11 p.m.: The second period is underway. It'll be 4 on 4 for 1:38, then Seattle has a shortened power play.

End of the first period: Quebec 1, Seattle 0

7:52 p.m.: After 20 minutes, Quebec has a 1-0 lead thanks to the goal from Vsevolod Komarov. It was a very even period that got a bit chippy towards the end. Shots were 10-9 in favor of Seattle in the frame.

7:51 p.m.: With less than a second left, Quebec's James Malatesta is called for cross-checking, so that will negate the Schaefer penalty. There were a number of cross-checks going on in the play before the officials decided enough was enough.

7:46 p.m.: Quebec is going to a four-minute power play with 2:23 left in the first as Reid Schaefer gets a double minor for high-sticking.

7:45 p.m.: Seattle has gotten a couple of opportunities late in this period, the latest being a one-timer from Lucas Ciona in the slot, but Willaim Rousseau flashed the pad. A very even game so far.

7:43 p.m.: Play is back to five on five with about three and a half to go in the opening frame.

7:41 p.m.: Colton Dach and Nathan Gaucher each get minors for roughing after a post-whistle scrum, so the teams will skate 4 on 4 for two minutes.

7:39 p.m.: Both teams have settled in defensively, especially Seattle, and there hasn't been nearly as many odd-man rushes in the back half of the period than in the first few minutes. Quebec remains ahead 1-0 with less than seven minutes to go.

7:27 p.m.: Seattle kills off the Dach minor so we're back to five on five play.

7:25 p.m.: And now Quebec are going to go right to the power play as Colton Dach is called for tripping.

7:23 p.m.: GOAL! Quebec breaks through first as Vsevolod Komarov rips a shot over Milic's glove on a 2 on 1 with Kassim Gaudet to open the scoring. Nathan Gaucher picks up the secondary assist on the play. It's an early lead for the Remparts just 6:31 into the game. Quebec 1, Seattle 0.

7:21 p.m.: Seattle's Brad Lambert split the Quebec defense on a rush and gets a shot on William Rousseau as he's falling to the ice, but the Remparts goaltender turned it aside. Early chances for both sides, but still no score.

7:19 p.m.: Quebec's Nathan Gaucher blocks a Seattle shot from the point, and the Remparts go down on a 2 on 0, however Gaucher couldn't handle the puck and his backhand attempt was stuffed by Milic.

7:16 p.m.: Quebec has been all over Seattle to start. The Remparts have maintained a ton of offensive zone time through the first three minutes and just had their best chance when Pier-Olivier Roy slipped in alone on Thomas Milic, but he couldn't beat the pad of the Thunderbirds goaltender.

7:14 p.m.: Seattle's Colton Dach lays a big hit on Quebec's Jeremy Langlois down low in the Quebec zone. There has been no lack of physicality to start.

7:11 p.m.: Puck is down and the final game of the Memorial Cup in on.

Pregame

6:30 p.m.: Here's how the two sides are expected to line up for the 2023 Memorial Cup final. Seattle is rolling out five NHL first-round picks: Dylan Guenther (Coyotes), Brad Lambert (Jets), Kevin Korchinski (Blackhawks), Nolan Allen (Blackhawks) and Reid Schaefer (Predators). Quebec has two in Zachary Bolduc (Blues) and Nathan Gaucher (Ducks).

5:45 p.m.: No Seattle Thunderbirds team has ever reached a Memorial Cup final until 2023.

5:30 p.m.: Quebec enters the championship game well rested. The Remparts last played on May 30, giving them four days of rest. Seattle comes in with just a day off between contests but also momentum from its semifinal win on Friday.
