Paul Bissonnette accuses Daniel Carcillo of racist behavior: What we know image

Paul Bissonnette and Daniel Carcillo were enforcers on the ice and even though their playing careers are over, they are still trading barbs on Twitter.

The exchange began when Bissonnette responded to a tweet by Carcillo regarding an article posted by The (Toronto) Globe and Mail about Bissonette becoming the most influential person in hockey. The tweet read: "Damage control after the fallout with (Jeremy) Roenick."

Roenick left NBC Sports after he was suspended for inappropriate comments made on the Barstool Sports podcast "Spittin' Chiclets" about colleagues Kathryn Tappen, Patrick Sharp and Anson Carter. Bissonnette is a co-host of the podcast.

Bissonnette responded to Carcillo's tweet by stating that Carcillo called him the N-word in the locker room while they were teammates on AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the mid-2000s. He also alleged that Carcillo walked around an NHL dressing room wearing a robe that had a swastika embroidered on it.

Carcillo responded to Bissonnette late Saturday night, tweeting that he used the slur and apologized to Bissonnette.

Here's everything we know so far.

What is Daniel Carcillo accused of saying?

Paul Bissonnette accused Carcillo of calling him the N-word while they were teammates with AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The two played together on that team from 2005-07.

Carcillo, in response, confirmed that he used the slur and that he apologized for saying it. He added that Bissonnette "accepted the apology months ago."

On Sunday, Carcillo posted a video explaining what happened, stating that he is guilty of making racist and homophobic comments to people on and off the ice.

He went on to address Bissonnette's comments specifically, saying that Bissonnette would always joke about himself and his mother to "get a rise out of people." Carcillo said he participated in that banter, adding that Bissonnette called himself the N-word. Carcillo also said he is "not proud of" taking part.

Carcillo denied ever wearing a robe embroidered with a swastika.

Bissonnette responds to Carcillo's video response

Bissonnette responded to Carcillo's video with a trio of tweets. He said the last thing he wanted to do was to take this feud online, but "I fired five warning shots but you wouldn't listen. You pushed me over the edge."

He said he will discuss everything on his "Spittin' Chiclets" podcast and called out those who were sending Carcillo death threats.

Carcillo tweeted Sunday night that he's having a law enforcement professional watch over his family as he travels to Canada because of the death threats.

Bissonnette, who played six years in the NHL, angrily addressed Carcillo's accusations of him using the N-word, calling them "complete lies." He also posted a screenshot of a text exchange with an unknown person who said they got Carcillo the swastika-embroidered robe.

Former, current NHL players react

Bissonnette's tweet Saturday set off a frenzied reaction, including from Roenick.
