Patrick Roy coaching record: Islanders hire legendary goalie to replace Lane Lambert as New York head coach image

The Islanders are making a head coaching change, as the team announced on Saturday that Lane Lambert has been relieved of his duties.

His replacement? One of the greatest goaltenders of all time.

Patrick Roy has been tabbed as the new head coach of the Isles. The legendary goalie for the Canadiens and Avalanche gets his second crack at the helm of an NHL bench, with New York hoping that his structure can get the club back on track.

Roy, 58, previously spent the past five seasons as the head coach of the Quebec Remparts, a Canadian major junior hockey club that plays in the QMJHL. The Remparts enjoyed an incredible 2022-23 season last year, winning the QMJHL championship for the sixth time in franchise history, while also hoisting the Memorial Cup for the third time.

The change on the bench comes during a bad skid for the Islanders. The team has lost four in a row and eight out of their past 10, dropping their record to 19-15-11. The Isles have failed to win back-to-back games for over a month, and they find themselves currently sixth in the Metropolitan Division and two points out of a wild-card spot.

The Sporting News takes a look at Roy's previous coaching history, both in the NHL and QMJHL:

Has Patrick Roy coached in the NHL?

This is not the first time that Roy will be behind an NHL bench. The former goaltender was hired by the Avalanche as the team's head coach and vice president of hockey operations in May of 2013.

Roy's first season in the NHL could not have gone any better. The Avs tied the franchise record for most wins with 52, winning the Central Division and posting the league's best away record. For his efforts, Roy was the recipient of the Jack Adams Award for Coach of the Year.

Despite the regular season success, the Avalanche were upset in the first round of the 2014 playoffs by the Wild.

The magic of his first season quickly vanquished in 2014-15 and '15-16. Colorado failed to make the playoffs either season, and Roy ultimately stepped down as the head coach after the 2015-16 campaign.

As mentioned, Roy spent three seasons coaching in the NHL with Colorado. While his first year was incredibly successful, the downfall of the latter two seasons resulted in Roy stepping down from his head coaching role.

In total, Roy amassed a record of 139-92-24 with the Avalanche, making one playoff appearance while failing to win a round in the postseason.

QMJHL

Roy got his initial start in coaching back in 2005 with the Remparts. As the owner and general manager of the team, Roy took over head coaching duties in the early portion of the '05-06 season.

The coach spent eight seasons in the role before leaving for the NHL after the 2012-13 season. However, Roy returned to the Remparts for the '18-19 season for his second stint as the head coach.

Roy spent five seasons at the head of the Quebec bench before stepping down from the role last season, going off into the sunset with a QMJHL title and Memorial Cup win. He was replaced by Eric Veilleux ahead of this campaign.

In his two stints with Quebec, Roy finished with a record of 524-255-66, winning one QMJHL championship in 12 playoff appearances and earning two Memorial Cups.
