The Maple Leafs are on the brink of elimination.

After securing the franchise its first playoff series win since 2004, Toronto has gone cold in the second round. The club finds itself in an 0-3 hole against the Panthers with Game 4 on Wednesday.

"It's meant to be hard," Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe said after Game 3. "Anything worth achieving is hard."

Only four teams in NHL playoff history have overcome three-game deficits and advanced. The most recent example was in 2014 when the Kings stormed back from down 0-3 against the Sharks to win their first-round series.

Florida has proved to be a much tougher task than expected. The Panthers pulled out a 3-2 overtime win at home on Sunday thanks to a game-winning goal by Sam Reinhart.

After knocking off the record-setting Bruins in the first round, the club is one win away from securing its first conference finals appearance since 1996.

"We aren't as deep as the teams that we've played," Panthers head coach Paul Maurice said ahead of Game 4. "It's just a fact. But we've got some really nice stories of guys whose names don't get out there much who are really important to us."
