Oops, NHL engraves Robin Lehner's Masterton with wrong team image

Robin Lehner made headlines when he won the Bill Masterton Trophy, the NHL award for best exemplifying "the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey" during the 2018-19 season. On Saturday, he finally received his trophy, but there's just one problem — and it's a big one.

It bears the wrong team's name.

When Lehner finally received his trophy, it named him a New York Ranger last season. Lehner, who actually played for the New York Islanders last season, had never played for Long Island's in-state rival, located in the center of Manhattan, but someone along the line clearly confused the two franchises when putting his name on the award.

He seemed to take the engravement error in stride, posting a photo of the trophy to Twitter with the following caption: "You had one job... 🤔."

The Rangers franchise itself got in the fun, too; the team's Twitter account sarcastically responded to Lehner's tweet to congratulate him.

Lehner won the Masterton after he publicly shared his history of struggles with mental health and addiction in an open letter via The Athletic prior to the 2018-19 campaign. After that, he went on to put up career-high numbers with the Isles last season, going 25-13-3 record and posting a .930 save percentage and six shutouts. The 28-year-old netminder finished second in Vezina Trophy voting for the league's best goalie and also won the William M. Jennings trophy with Thomas Greiss after the duo posted the lowest GAA in the league (2.21). At the NHL Awards, he gave a heartfelt speech about overcoming his mental illness.

The Swedish netminder left the Islanders organization this summer to sign a one-year, $5 million contract with the Chicago Blackhawks, marking the fourth team he has played for in his career. Fortunately for those in charge of engraving trophies, the next NHL Awards are not for ten more months — plenty of time to learn what team Lehner plays for should he win another trophy.
