The IIHF kicked off 2023 with the final days of the 2023 World Juniors, where Canada earned a gold medal by defeating Czechia in overtime of the championship game.
But the international hockey competition does not stop. There are more players representing their respective countries, starting this weekend with the 2023 IIHF World Women's U18 Championship.
Eight teams are gathering in Sweden for the week-long competition. It's a chance for the best 16- and 17-year-old women's hockey players to showcase their ability on the international stage, while also competing for a medal.

Canada is the reigning champ of the tournament, defeating the USA in the 2022 gold-medal game. The two North American countries are the only teams to win gold in the competition since it was created in 2008.
When is the 2023 Women's U18 Worlds?

The 2023 tournament is set to start on Sunday, Jan. 8 and run until Sunday, Jan. 15
The group stage will take place over the first four days, with games on the 8th, 9th and 11th. The quarterfinals will be played on Jan. 12, the fifth-place game and semifinals on Jan. 14 and the tournament will conclude with the bronze and gold medal games on Jan. 15.
The best-of-three relegation series will take place on Jan. 12, 14 and 15, if needed.

TSN and the NHL Network are the homes in North America for the Women's U18 Worlds actions.
Canadian viewers can watch the competition on TSN or stream the games through TSN.ca or the TSN app. The platform will have the games from Group A, in addition to the fifth-place game, quarterfinals, semifinals and medal games.

The American audience can view the games live on TV on the NHL Network, or can stream them through fuboTV which has a free trial.
NHL Network will only broadcast group games involving the USA and will have both medal games.

Where is the 2023 Women's U18 Worlds?

The 2023 Women's U18 Worlds are being held in Östersund, Sweden at Östersund Arena.
The facility houses two rinks and is home to Östersund IK, a Swedish hockey club in HockeyAllsvenskan, the second tier of Swedish professional hockey.
This is the second time that Sweden has hosted the tournament. Previously, the Women's U18 Worlds were played in Stockholm in 2011.
The 2021 tournament was scheduled to be held in Sweden in the cities of Linköping and Mjölby, however, the competition was canceled due to COVID-19.
2023 Women's U18 Worlds standings
Teams will play four preliminary games in a round-robin format within their group, followed by a three-round playoff.
In the group stage, teams earn three points for a regulation win, two points for an overtime win, one point for an overtime loss and no points for a regulation loss.
All four teams from Group A advance to the knockout stage. The top two Group A teams get byes to the semis, while the Nos. 3 and 4 teams play in the quarterfinals.
In Group B, only the top two teams advance to play in the quarterfinals. The bottom two will play in a best-of-three relegation series. The winner of the series stays in the top tournament for next year, while the loser will be relegated to Division I A in 2024 and replaced by the champion of that tournament from 2023.
The winners of quarterfinal games advance to the semis, while the losers will play in a 5th-place game for seeding purposes. The victors of the semifinals will face off in the gold medal game, and the semis losers will play for bronze.
