The 2024 IIHF World champion will be decided today.
The final game of this year's edition of the World Championship is set for today, as Czechia and Switzerland are fighting in the gold medal game on Sunday.
Host country Czechia handed Sweden its first loss at the tournament, taking out the Swedes 7-3 in the semifinal on Saturday. Hurricanes center Martin Necas led the offense with a goal and three assists, while Senators winger Dominik Kubalik and former NHLer Lukas Sedlak each had two goals and an assist.
In the other semifinal, Switzerland stunned Canada in a shootout to advance to the gold medal game. Goaltender Leonarado Genoni made 44 saves and stopped four of the five shootout attempts to knock out the defending gold medalists. Kings winger Kevin Fiala and Jets forward Nino Neiderreiter had the two goals in the semifinal contest.
Czechia last played for the championship in 2010. That year, the Czechs took down the Russians to win the country its sixth gold medal. On the other side, the Swiss haven't won a gold medal at the event yet, last participating in the final game of the tournament in 2018 when they fell to Sweden.
