Acquired in Karlsson deal, DeMelo and Tierney score in Senators win image

The Erik Karlsson trade may just be working out for the Ottawa Senators. On Saturday night two players acquired in the deal that sent the two-time Norris Trophy Winner to San Jose scored in the team's 5-3 over Toronto.

In the first period, Thomas Chabot's pass to Zach Smith couldn't be handled by the centerman and the puck went right to Dylan DeMelo at the right point. The defenseman turned and snapped the wrister right through the five-hole of goaltender Frederik Andersen for his first goal with the Senators. DeMelo, whose goal gave Ottawa a 1-0 lead, had a big night on the blueline as he blocked two shots and was plus-4.

Entering Saturday, DeMelo had three goals and 29 assists with a plus-2 in 134 career games.

Chris Tierney, who also scored five-hole, did it with a little more panache in the second period.

Ryan Dzingel, who picked the pocket of Connor Brown at the blueline, backhanded the puck out of the zone. Tierney, coming off the bench, skated to the puck and went in on Andersen 1-on-1, beating the netminder to give the Senators a 3-2 lead.

Tierney, who skated in all 82 games last season for San Jose, had an assist in Ottawa's first game of the season. Before Saturday's game, Tierney netted 41 goals and 64 assists in 285 career games.
