Two minutes into overtime is all the Montreal Canadiens (19-13-5) needed to end the Vegas Golden Knight's (20-15-3) six-game winning streak at home.
Phillip Danault's first career hat trick and Paul Byron's overtime goal pushed the Canadiens past the Golden Knights in Las Vegas on Sunday afternoon. It was the Canadiens' seventh win in the team's last 10 games.
Danualt started his memorable night early as he scored just 3:40 into the first period, netting a one-timer past Vegas netminder Marc-André Fleury, to give Montreal a 1-0 lead. The 25-year-old then tied the game at 2 as he deflected Jordie Benn's wrist shot from the blue line at 8:10 of the second period. Officials reviewed the play to see if Danault's stick was high, but the goal was upheld.
With just 1:25 left in the third period and the Canadiens with an empty net, Danault -- stationed on the doorstep -- notched his first hat trick, tying the game and sending it to overtime. The Canadiens sealed the deal on Byron's game-winning goal two minutes into overtime.
Brandon Pirri netted two goals for the Golden Knights in the loss.
Montreal will enjoy an extended holiday break until next Friday when they head to Florida to face the Panthers.
