The Dallas Stars will be without the services of Corey Perry for the next two weeks.

Perry was handed a five-game suspension by the NHL's Department of Player Safety on Friday following his ejection from Monday's Winter Classic. The 34-year-old forward delivered an elbow to the head of Nashville Predators defenseman Ryan Ellis early in the first period of the annual New Year's Day game, resulting in his expulsion after just 38 seconds of ice time.

Nashville scored twice during the ensuing five-minute power play, but the Stars ultimately won the game 4-2.

Perry's game misconduct was the first such penalty for any player over the 12-game history of the Winter Classic. His long, lonely walk across the Cotton Bowl Stadium field to the locker rooms became something of a viral sensation on social media, but the veteran of more than 1,000 NHL games will not be laughing following Friday's punishment.

Perry, who signed with the Stars in the offseason as a free agent after 14 seasons with the Anaheim Ducks, will miss Dallas' upcoming games against the Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, Ducks, San Jose Sharks and Colorado Avalanche, and he will forfeit $40,322.60 of salary. His suspension will be lifted for the Stars' Jan. 16 contest with the Buffalo Sabres.

Perry has three goals and 13 points in 34 games with the Stars this season.
