Sunday's unexpected announcement that the Canadian Women's Hockey League would discontinue operations as of May 1 sent a shockwave throughout the hockey world.

In particular, those who suited up for one of the CWHL's six teams this season were hit hardest as the development cast doubt on the players' future opportunity to play professional hockey.

Several of the league's active players, coaches and teams took to Twitter shortly after the CWHL's press release went live. The reactions included personal disappointment, the loss of the league for future generations and the hope for the status to change in the not too distant future.

Today I was told that the league I play in has ceased operations. While devastating, I’m at grateful for what the #CWHL has given me. . It’s given me an opportunity to play the game I love again, the game I thought I had to give up I was able to come back to. Through this I’ve been able to be a visible force to show others that they can live their lives as their authentic selves and to follow their dreams and passions. . I can’t tell you how honoured I’ve felt to be a visible example that these things are possible. Visibility is so important in giving us proof that we can do anything. . When I was growing up I didn’t know transitioning was an option and didn’t think happiness was attainable for me. I look forward to my opportunities in the future and see a bright future for the trans community with less hate, more acceptance, love, and knowledge. I know we will get there. 📸 - @loribolliger #tdov #trans #transgender #transathlete #transdayofvisibility #transdayofvisibility2019 #equality #visibilty #transvisibility #love #optimistic #optimism #positivity
