In case you didn't know it, Connor McDavid is good.
The fourth-year Edmonton Oiler is off to a historic start, contributing to all five of the organization's goals to start the year.
Only four players have contributed to more consecutive team goals at the beginning of a season in NHL history.
In 1986-87, Hall of Famer Adam Oates was involved in the first seven Detroit Red Wings goals, netting three of them himself. Three-time Stanley Cup champion Aurele Joliat (in 1929-30 with the Montreal Canadiens), Hall of Famer Bill Cowley (in 1938-39 with the Boston Bruins) and Andre Boudrias (in 1973-74 with the Vancouver Canucks) each contributed to their team's first six goals.
On Saturday, McDavid had a goal and an assist including the game-winning goal in Edmonton's 2-1 victory over the New York Rangers.
With 13:37 left and the Oilers on the power play, McDavid received a pass from Leon Draisaitl across the top of the crease. The Oilers captain took the pass off his skate and beat Henrik Lundqvist with the backhander.
McDavid humbly played off the goal as lucky in his post-game comments.
"I think I just tried to get it there. Maybe a bit of a lucky play," McDavid said. "[Lundqvist] was definitely there. Just found a way to get it in. When the goalie’s stretched out like that there’s a lot of open spots and luckily I found one."
Oilers head coach Todd McLellan credited the goal to not just McDavid's talent, but his teammates as well.
"He’s one of, well if not the best player in the world, for a reason," McLellan said of McDavid. "But there [are] some other players that had to do some things to keep that puck alive to create the opportunity for Connor to put it in. But you saw his hands, his skillset to kind of scoop it out of a bad spot and at least make a play to the net."
McDavid first kept the streak going when he assisted on a Ryan Nugent-Hopkins goal in the first period. As he entered the attacking zone, McDavid found the trailer Darnell Nurse who tried to get the puck to Nugent-Hopkins. Instead, it went off the leg of Rangers defenseman Adam McQuaid and Nugent-Hopkins buried it.
McDavid looks to continue his streak on Tuesday as the Oilers travel to Winnipeg to face the Jets. They finally open the season at home on Thursday against Boston.
