No Alexis Lafreniere. No Joe Veleno. No problem.

Despite skating with only 11 forwards, Canada easily defeated Germany 4-1 to move to the top of Group B at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship.

It was a strong showing for the Canadians who entered the game after being shutout by Russia 6-0 on Saturday. Joel Hofer made his first start of the tournament and looked solid between the pipes. The Portland Winterhawks netminder and St. Louis Blues prospect made 18 saves on 19 shots with the lone tally coming late in the third during a 5-on-3. He made key stops on Justin Schutz (Florida Panthers), Yannik Valenti — who eventually broke through and scored — and J.J. Peterka's (2020 draft) breakaway chance when it was a one-goal game.

Nolan Foote got Canada on the board in the first period with a rocket up high against German goalie Hendrik Hane. The Canadians added two in the second less than two minutes apart — by Liam Foudy (Columbus Blue Jackets) and Calen Addison (Pittsburgh Penguins) — to take a big 3-0 lead. Ty Dellandrea (Dallas Stars) collected his second, and second empty-netter of the tournament, to close out the scoring.

With the win on Monday, head coach Dale Hunter's squad can clinch the top spot of Group B with a victory over the Czech Republic on New Year's Eve. They will get Veleno back from his one-game suspension for headbutting. However, the status of phenom Alexis Lafreniere is still unknown. During the first intermission of Monday's game, TSN's Bob McKenzie released the following statement from his Lafreniere's agent: "Alexis wants to play more than anything but that decision will be taken based on his long-term future and to not risk anything. It is simply too important. If there is any risk to aggravate the injury or expose a weakened knee to any further injury, he will not be taking that risk."

Canada's matchup with the Czech Republic is at 1 p.m. ET on TSN (Canada) and NHL Network (United States).
