It's hard enough being a Toronto Maple Leafs fan in Quebec, but eight-year-old Jacob Bertrand couldn't even get a birthday cake with his favourite hockey team's logo on it.

A Facebook post went viral over the weekend as a Montreal-area family found the lighter side of a bakery mix-up that seems almost too odd to be true. Jacob's stepmother, Tania Levesque, posted a photo of what was supposed to be a cake adorned with the logo of the Maple Leafs for the youngster's birthday celebration.

Instead, the bakery used the logo of Maple Leaf Foods, the Mississauga, Ont.-based consumer meat giant known more for cold cuts and bacon strips than slap shots and power plays.

Levesque posted that the bakery found the logo on Google, but apparently didn't use the word "Toronto" in its search. The lack of that crucial keyword resulted in the unfortunate error that led to the mix-up. The family took it in stride, though, even if they were a little confused at first.

"We had a good laugh," Levesque told the CBC, adding that the kids at Jacob's birthday party "don't know anything about cold cuts."

Word of the family's misfortune spread as Levesque's Facebook post went viral. It has been shared over 1,400 times as of Monday afternoon, drawing the attention of the company whose logo was the cause of the misunderstanding.

Maple Leaf Foods posted to its Twitter account on Monday that it has reached out to the family "with a surprise" for the birthday boy. The tweet noted that while the company likes the look of the cake, Maple Leaf Foods knows that Jacob "had a different Maple Leaf in mind."

Jacob is a fan of the Maple Leafs despite his father and grandfather supporting the hometown Canadiens, Levesque told the CBC.

"I don't know where he gets that," she said.
