Sterling Shepard injury update: Giants receiver (concussion) out Sunday vs. Bills image

Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Bills, according to the team's final injury report.

Shepard was placed in the NFL's concussion protocol this week as the result of a hit he suffered in Sunday's loss to the Cowboys.

Despite apparently being injured midway through the third quarter, he continued playing, finishing with six catches for 42 yards.

The Giants had held out hope that Shepard could play, and he had been working on the side in practice this week. Coach Pat Shurmur said Thursday he was "doing OK," but still needed to pass steps in the protocol before being cleared.

That won't happen in time for Sunday's game.

In the meantime, the Giants' injury woes to their receiving corps are bordering on the absurd. Cody Latimer and Darius Slayton are both hampered by hamstring injuries. Slayton has been ruled out for Sunday and Latimer is questionable. The situation was already dire. Golden Tate has three games remaining on his suspension for violating the NFL policy on performance-enhancing substances, and Corey Coleman is on the injured reserve.

To fill the void, the Giants re-signed TJ Jones on Thursday.

The former Detroit Lions receiver led the Giants in receptions in the preseason but didn't make the final roster cut.
