Stefon Diggs contract details: How Bills WR’s extension compares to Tyreek Hill, Davante Adams megadeals image

The NFL signaled a crazy offseason for receivers early on when the Jaguars signed Christian Kirk to a four-year deal with a base value of $72 million. Several players including Tyreek Hill, Davante Adams, Amari Cooper, Mike Williams and Chris Godwin agreed to long-term extensions in wake of that contract and set new standards on the receiver market.

Now, another player has joined that group of wideouts receiving big-time paydays. That would be Bills star Stefon Diggs.

Diggs, 28, agreed to a long-term contract extension with the Bills on Wednesday. The deal will tie him to Buffalo through 2028 and will make him one of the NFL's highest-paid receivers.

Diggs has been a star for the Bills over the last two years after being traded to Buffalo from Minnesota in 2020. He led the NFL in catches (127) and receiving yards (1,535) in his All-Pro season in 2020 before posting another 100-plus catch season in 2021 with a career-high 10 touchdowns.

How much is Diggs getting on his new contract? He didn't surpass some of the other top receiver contracts signed this offseason, but he is still poised to be one of the five highest-paid receivers in the NFL in 2022 and beyond.

Stefon Diggs contract details

Diggs signed a four-year contract extension with the Bills that will be worth up to $104 million, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. Diggs will earn $70 million in guaranteed money as part of his new deal, marking the second-most guaranteed money ever given to a wide receiver.

The average annual value (AAV) of Diggs' extension is $26 million per season. That ranks fourth-highest among NFL receiver contracts.

Before signing the extension, Diggs had two years remaining on his contract with the Bills. As such, the 28-year-old is tied to Buffalo for the next six years. The total value of his contract over that time is $124.1 million.

How Stefon Diggs' contract compares to Tyreek Hill, Davante Adams extensions

Diggs isn't the first big-name receiver to sign a lucrative extension during the 2022 NFL offseason. Two other top pass-catchers — Tyreek Hill and Davante Adams — have also agreed to deals that have made them among the highest-paid receivers in NFL history.

Adams was the first of the bunch to sign an extension. After he was traded from the Packers to the Raiders, he signed a five-year deal worth $141 million. Hill was second after he agreed to a four-year deal worth $120 million after being traded from the Chiefs to the Dolphins.

Below is a full comparison of the three contracts with salary details from OverTheCap.com.

Player Contract length Salary AAV Guaranteed
Tyreek Hill 4 years $120 million $30 million $72.2 million
Davante Adams 5 years $141 million $28 million $65.7 million
Stefon Diggs 4 years $104 million $26 million $70 million

Hill's contract is the most valuable in terms of average annual value and total guaranteed money while Adams' is the largest deal in totality. Diggs got the lowest total salary and AAV but has Adams beat in terms of guaranteed money.

Though Diggs signed the shortest extension of the three receivers, he will be under contract the longest, as his four-year extension will be tacked onto the two years he has remaining on his deal. That means he won't be a free agent until the 2028 offseason unless the Bills release him. Both Hill and Adams are free agents in 2027, so the Bills did well to keep Diggs both longer and cheaper than his counterparts.

Highest-paid WRs in the NFL

Of course, cheaper is a relative term when discussing Diggs' contract. He is still one of the five highest-paid NFL receivers in terms of salary, AAV and total guarantees.

Only Hill, Adams and DeAndre Hopkins are set to make more annually than Diggs on his new contract extension. He is just one of four NFL receivers to make more than $25 million annually, as you can see via the table below.

Player Team AAV
Tyreek Hill Dolphins $30 million
Davante Adams Raiders $28 million
DeAndre Hopkins Cardinals $27.25 million
Stefon Diggs Bills $26 million
D.J. Moore Panthers $20.6 million
Keenan Allen Chargers $20.03 million
Mike Williams Chargers $20 million
Amari Cooper Browns $20 million
Chris Godwin Buccaneers $20 million
Michael Thomas Saints $19.25 million

Diggs may rank fourth in terms of average annual value, but in terms of total guarantees, his $70 million will rank second among receivers behind only Hill. He is also one of just four NFL receivers to sign a contract worth $100 million or more, joining Hill, Adams and Amari Cooper in that exclusive club.
