Authorities have arrested the son of a former NFL player who was found dead with his wife at the couple's home last week in Long Prairie, Minnesota, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported Sunday.
Dylan Bennett, 22, was charged with two counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of his parents, Barry Bennett and Carol Bennett. A four-day manhunt ended Saturday in Cancun, Mexico, after his phone and credit card purchases were tracked.
Barry was 63 and his wife was 66.
According to the report, Dylan had contacted Todd County (Minnesota) Sheriff Steve Och and disclosed his intention to turn himself in to the FBI before Mexican law enforcement captured him first.
“It’s incomprehensible,” said Dave Gibson, Barry’s longtime friend and former high school teammate. “I don’t know what the demons were stirring around in his mind and heart that would drive him to this point.”
According to Gibson, Dylan struggled with confidence and mental health issues.
Barry, who was a defensive lineman during his 11-year NFL career, and his wife were found dead Wednesday afternoon by a friend who went to check on them after calls and texts went unanswered. An autopsy indicated they had been shot to death Monday.
Barry played mostly for the Saints (1978-81), who drafted him in the third round of the 1978 NFL Draft, and Jets (1982-88). He played one game with the Vikings in 1988. His best season was with the Jets in 1985, when he recorded 7.5 sacks in 16 starts.
