The Broncos hoped Russell Wilson would be their long-term franchise quarterback, but that dream only lasted two seasons.
Denver benched the veteran quarterback and subsequently released him during the offseason. The Steelers signed Wilson, and he'll get an opportunity to face his former team just one season later.
While Wilson is in a new division now, he remains in the AFC, which increased the likelihood that he'd compete against the Broncos. Sure enough, the Steelers are set to play in Denver this season, so Wilson will return to the place he called home for two seasons.
Wilson isn't the elite quarterback he used to be with Seattle, but he's still a starting-caliber play-caller. The major question surrounding Wilson this season is how long he remains the starter.
The Steelers traded for Justin Fields a short time after signing Wilson to a one-year contract. Fields, 25, is a much better candidate than Wilson, 35, to solve Pittsburgh's long-term quarterback problem, but the veteran is still expected to start the season under center in Pittsburgh.
Here's what to know about the Steelers vs. Broncos matchup and how to get tickets for it.

When does Russell Wilson play the Broncos in 2024?
- Date: Sunday, Sept. 15
- Time: 4:25 p.m. ET
- TV channel: CBS
Wilson won't have to wait long to play against his former team. The Steelers head to Denver to square off with the Broncos in Week 2, so Wilson will have a chance to earn a measure of revenge over Sean Payton and Co. early in the season.
Wilson didn't have any major spats with the Broncos prior to his release. In fact, he had hoped to win multiple Super Bowls with the organization. That said, fans are still unpredictable, so it's unclear how they'll react to his return.
