The Miami Dolphins were trounced by the Baltimore Ravens, 59-10, in the first week of the 2019 NFL season. Meanwhile, the New England Patriots defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 33-3 in a celebratory night at Gillette Stadium that included a Super Bowl banner raising and Antonio Brown's arrival.

Two franchises at drastically different points in team history — and their respective seasons — meet in Miami in Week 2. The Patriots and Dolphins last met in Week 14 of the 2018 regular season, when Miami pulled off a miraculous last-second 34-33 win on a play that included two laterals to get the touchdown. It was the second time in a row the Dolphins have beat New England at home and the fifth home win (out of six attempts) against the Patriots since Dec. 2013.

The Bill Belichick coaching tree expanded again in February when longtime New England coach Brian Flores took Miami's head coaching job, and the protégé meets his master in desperate need to quiet critics after the Dolphins lost to Baltimore by 49 points in Week 1. A number of Miami players reportedly already requested trades out of Miami after that first game. While Flores has denied the accuracy of such reports, the Dolphins have already been accused of intentionally tanking this season. Another blowout loss against his former organization would make Flores' head coaching career's rough start even worse.

Unfortunately for Miami, another loss is what many expect come Sunday. The Patriots are chugging along just fine in the team's 19th season with Belichick at the helm and Tom Brady under center, and cruised to an easy victory over a better AFC opponent last week in the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers, who also beat the Patriots at home last season, crumbled against the defending Super Bowl champions. The oddsmakers expect a similar result in the first of 2019's two New England-Miami matchups.

The Patriots, who remain 15.5 point favorites in the division matchup, held a better team to just three points in Week 1 and Brady looked as strong as ever when he threw 341 yards and three touchdown passes. Miami, meanwhile, struggled to move the ball on the ground (21 total rushing yards in Week 1) and were offered a quarterback clinic by Baltimore's Lamar Jackson in the Ravens' visit to Hard Rock Stadium.

The Dolphins' run game may struggle again against a New England defense that allowed just 32 yards on the ground last week. Pittsburgh QB Ben Roethlisberger threw for 276 yards against the Patriots' defense in Week 1, but he failed to find a receiver for a touchdown. Miami's Ryan Fitzpatrick won't have it any easier in Week 2.

Patriots vs. Dolphins head-to-head stats

  • New England has lost 12 road games since the start of the 2014 season. A third of those losses have come in Miami, coming in 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2018.
  • The Dolphins have lost two straight home games, failing to scored more than 10 points in either game. A loss Sunday would be their first three-game losing streak since Nov. 28, 2014–Oct. 4, 2015 – though the last of those three losses came in London.
  • The Patriots were 3-5 on the road last season – their worst road record since 2009 when they were 2-6. They had lost a total of four road games between 2015 and 2017.
  • Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has thrown 3 or more touchdowns in nine regular season games against the Dolphins. He has more against just one team (Buffalo – 12).
  • The Dolphins allowed 644 total yards to Baltimore in Week 1. It was the-most yards a team has allowed in the first week of the season since the NFL-AFL merger.
