The Patriots and Commanders close out preseason action Sunday. Both teams are still finalizing roster cuts.

New England is in rebuild mode in life after Bill Belichick, who led the team for more than two decades and won multiple Super Bowls. Belichick’s contract was not renewed after last season, which saw the team fumble in turmoil and a cloud of dust after a 4-13 finish. The team fell flat to the Jets in a 17-3 letdown in Week 18.

Ex-Patriots star Jarod Mayo, a mainstay linebacker during the 2000s, will attempt to fix the mess that has plagued the team since the last Super Bowl victory to close out the 2018-19 season.

In doing so, Mayo took the first step toward future success, drafting North Carolina’s Drake Maye in April. Mayo said after a 14-13 loss to the Eagles last week that Maye, who led the Patriots on two scoring drives, could be in contention to earn the starting job by Week 1.

“He had great composure,” Mayo told reporters. “I thought it was a good drive. I thought he went out there and did a lot of good things. Hopefully, he can build on that, and we’ll see how this week goes.”

Maye went 6-for-11 and scored a rushing touchdown in the loss, showing signs of who he could become.

Meanwhile, the Commanders are still figuring out the kinks at 0-2, along with their newly minted rookie quarterback, Jayden Daniels, who was drafted out of LSU.

Despite a 13-6 loss in Miami last week, Daniels impressed in his brief stint of action, finishing 10-for-12 and racking up 78 passing yards.

Although the Patriots were four-point favorites as of Friday, odds won’t matter in the grand scheme, as both teams will have their rosters down to 53 by next week.
