On this day: Seahawks blew Super Bowl 49 on final play image

On this date four years ago, in Super Bowl 49, the Seattle Seahawks blew the last chance they had to come out as champs.

The Patriots and Seahawks made this game everything you would want in a Super Bowl, competing in a back-and-forth battle the whole night, but it all came down to one play.

Seattle spent the majority of the game handing it off to star running back Marshawn Lynch, who rushed for 102 yards on 24 carries, but when it came down to the last play of the game they had a different plan.

The Seahawks were down four with 29 seconds remaining in the game. Seattle lined up on New England’s one yard line, on second and goal. Russell Wilson threw a short pass right with confidence — a pass that was intended for Ricardo Lockette — but the ball found itself in the hands of New England’s Malcolm Butler, leaving Lockette on the ground dazed and confused.

Butler wasn’t the only one in disbelief. Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman had a look of hopefulness that quickly turned to disgust as he watched the play unfold.

Meanwhile, on the opposite sideline, Tom Brady was seen jumping up and down, like a little kid on Christmas morning, realizing he had won his fourth Super Bowl.
