NFL power rankings: Cowboys, Packers rise; Bears, Steelers, Browns stumble into Week 2 image

What a difference one week makes. Forget all the hype and expectations from what we thought we knew in the NFL preseason. The opening weekend of the 2019 regular season is not even completely in the books, and there are some teams that already look like nice surprises or serious disappointments.

Then there's the new-old team back at No. 1, reigning Super Bowl-champion New England, which keeps coming out and taking care of business.

MORE: The biggest overreactions from Week 1

Here's what teams are rising up or sliding down going into Week 2, according to Sporting News.

NFL power rankings

1. New England Patriots, 1-0 (previous ranking: 3)

The Patriots had already won the weekend when they agreed to add Antonio Brown to their potent offense. Then they pummeled Brown's former team, the Steelers, to get their latest championship rings in style. They've got everyone in major chase mode from the get-go.

2. Kansas City Chiefs, 1-0 (1)

The Chiefs also were impressive in ripping apart a good Jaguars defense on the road, with Patrick Mahomes picking up where he left off in MVP form. The boom of Sammy Watkins was timed well with the unfortunate collarbone injury that will keep Tyreek Hill out for a while.

3. Dallas Cowboys, 1-0 (5)

How about Sporting News' Super Bowl 54 pick throwing down a statement offensive performance with Dak Prescott? The Giants aren't very good, but the Cowboys proved they have the explosive scoring potential to further raise the complementary football pop for their defense.

4. New Orleans Saints, 0-0 (2)

The Saints need to wait until Monday night to try to shake off the non-pass interference call that went against them in the NFC championship game. They got better offensively and remain strong defensively, so they can challenge for No. 1 soon.

5. Los Angeles Rams, 1-0 (4)

What Super Bowl hangover? Sean McVay's team was prepared with a plan that included a great early strategy for Todd Gurley to win on a long, hot road trip in Carolina. The Rams are still the heavy favorites in the NFC West.

6. Green Bay Packers, 1-0 (9)

"We have a defense" will be the "R-E-L-A-X" of the 2019 season. Aaron Rodgers delivered the one and only touchdown drive on the road against a tough Bears defense as the improvements on the other side of the ball crushed Chicago. Just wait until he gets to pick apart any other defense.

7. Minnesota Vikings, 1-0 (12)

Mike Zimmer has re-established the identity he wants. Smash with offense, with Dalvin Cook and the running game behind a stronger line. Smash with defense, with all their accomplished veteran playmakers on every level. That sure makes Kirk Cousins' job a lot easier, doesn't it?

8. Baltimore Ravens, 1-0 (13)

Sure, it was the awful Dolphins the Ravens just ripped, but it's not easy to do that against any NFL opponent, and Lamar Jackson's flawless passing execution coupled with an improved traditional power running game proves the Ravens upgraded offensively, well timed to support a slightly lesser defense.

9. Los Angeles Chargers, 1-0 (7)

The Chargers pretty much confirmed they don't need Melvin Gordon to win big games, with Austin Ekeler taking it to the Colts through his game-winning touchdown in overtime. The defense will have some issues without Derwin James for a while, but Ekeler, Philip Rivers, Keenan Allen and Hunter Henry can keep masking them.

10. Philadelphia Eagles, 1-0 (6)

The Eagles didn't fly out of the gate until they decided to let DeSean Jackson take over on the deep ball from Carson Wentz. Their running game and defense need work to get to championship level again, but Wentz is back in MVP candidate form with Jackson, Alshon Jeffery and Zach Ertz.

11. Tennessee Titans, 1-0 (23)

The Titans fooled everyone with their shaky preseason. In Cleveland, Marcus Mariota and Derrick Henry were zoned in with big help from A.J. Brown and Delanie Walker. Mike Vrabel's defense, with studs on every level, balled out, too. This team is now exotic without the pure smashmouth.

12. Seattle Seahawks, 1-0 (15)

As expected, the Seahawks' defense had problems against the pass, as the days of the Legion of Boom are forever in the past. But their front seven contained the Bengals while Russell Wilson and Chris Carson took care of the offense.

13. San Francisco 49ers, 1-0 (16)

The 49ers saw Jimmy Garoppolo struggle in Tampa Bay, and their new prized running back, Tevin Coleman, got hurt. But that didn't matter, as Nick Bosa, Richard Sherman and the revamped defense for Robert Saleh proved to be the team's backbone. Physical play is the calling card, even down to the offense with their strong run-blocking and tight end George Kittle being the go-to guy.

14. Houston Texans, 0-0 (17)

The Texans gave up a ton of their future and lost Jadeveon Clowney since we last ranked them, but their offense also improved with Laremy Tunsil and Carlos Hyde. Deshaun Watson and his receivers will be locked into carrying them with big passing days, which will be needed with a defense that's overrated beyond J.J. Watt.

15. Chicago Bears, 0-1 (11)

The Bears' defense didn't lose its bite without Vic Fangio, but that Matt Nagy offense with Mitchell Trubisky was too pass-happy and inefficient despite all its weapons. Chicago won't repeat in the NFC North without better complementary football.

16. Indianapolis Colts, 0-1 (14)

The Colts hung tough and were resilient in coming back to force overtime against the Chargers, with Jacoby Brissett getting plenty of support from Marlon Mack and T.Y. HIlton. Unfortunately, they need to clean up their defense to take the AFC South.

17. Pittsburgh Steelers, 0-1 (10)

The Steelers didn't score a touchdown without Antonio Brown, but the bigger concern is how their pass defense got shredded by the Patriots despite their good pass rush and improved secondary. This team is reliant on the stop-the-run, run-the-ball formula to win more games in 2019, but their personnel situation might limit the success they can have with that.

18. Buffalo Bills, 1-0 (22)

The Bills don't get many style points for their big fourth-quarter comeback against the Jets, because they were simply making up for sloppy offensive play led by Josh Allen for the previous three quarters. But their defense remained tough for Sean McDermott, and Allen showed more conviction while passing when it mattered most.

19. Cleveland Browns, 0-1 (8)

That performance was the opposite of everything the Browns needed to do in the opener. They were lost, undisciplined and poorly coached, leading to poor execution despite their talent on both sides of the ball. It's only been a week, but the Ravens look much more like the class of the division.

20. New York Jets, 0-1 (18)

The Jets were looking great for most of the debut of Adam Gase and Gregg Williams until their game plans on both sides of the ball went off the rails in crunch time. That was a game New York really need to win to turn the corner as a wild-card team. Instead, the Jets look closer to the Dolphins than the Patriots.

21. Carolina Panthers, 0-1 (19)

Cam Newton continues to create more doubt about whether he can ever return to 2015 form. Christian McCaffrey has put the offense on his back, but it's not going to help much with equally bad defense against run and pass.

22. Atlanta Falcons, 0-1 (20)

The Falcons didn't show up against the Vikings until garbage time, as Dan Quinn's desire to be more running game- and defense-oriented didn't happen, getting no favors from the Vikings' defense on the road. Atlanta needs to quickly prove it's not another tease of a talented team.

23. Detroit Lions, 0-0-1 (25)

The tie makes us feel confused about where to put Matt Patricia's team, but the Lions did show nice upgrades, and the result was much better than the blowout loss in Week 1 against the Jets last season. The Lions will have a hard time competing in the NFC North, however, if they can't finish off bad teams.

24. Arizona Cardinals, 0-0-1 (31)

The Cardinals' offensive line and pass defense will continue to haunt them. But they had to be pleased with how a fourth-quarter Kyler Murray can keep them in every game, not to mention coach Kliff Kingsbury's ability to make the right adjustments.

25. Denver Broncos, 0-0 (24)

The Broncos will hope the bridge of Joe Flacco won't burn down their big-time defensive potential with Fangio. They need to beat the Raiders to have any shot at pushing the Chiefs or Chargers for anything in the AFC West.

26. Oakland Raiders, 0-0 (21)

The Raiders drop five spots after dropping Brown. It might end up being an addition by subtraction, though, as Jon Gruden and Mike Mayock totally have their team. Then again, the trickle-down also could be awful for Derek Carr in a new-look offense.

27. Cincinnati Bengals, 0-1 (26)

Zac Taylor knows offense, and he got some good play from Andy Dalton and saved John Ross from being a bust of a speed wide receiver. He even rebounded nicely with Giovani Bernard for Joe Mixon. The problem, however, continues to be on defense, where the Bengals are in desperate need of a true rebuild.

28. Washington Redskins, 0-1 (29)

The Redskins showed gumption in jumping out to an early lead in Philadelphia, with Case Keenum flinging the ball around like he has nothing (including his job to rookie Dwayne Haskins) to lose. Their defensive crumbling and lack of a running game, however, are not inspiring developments.

29. Jacksonville Jaguars, 0-1 (27)

The Jaguars' defense was supposed to give the Chiefs problems. Unfortunately, that defense was the problem, given the offense looked good even when rookie Gardner Minshew had to take the controls after Nick Foles broke his collarbone. Who knows? Maybe Minshew, Leonard Fournette, D.J. Chark, Chris Conley and Dede Westbrook can help them stay legit on one side of the ball.

30. New York Giants, 0-1 (28)

Eli Manning or Daniel Jones? The answer is still Eli, who actually played well while leaning heavily on Saquon Barkley and Evan Engram in Dallas. Jones' sad mop-up duty was unnecessary. Unfortunately, neither QB is a solution to putrid defense on every level.

31. Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 0-1 (30)

The Bucs showed up defensively and even flashed a good running game with Ronald Jones. But then there was Jameis Winston, turning back into a mistake machine to cost them at home against the 49ers. Pro football in Florida doesn't look good for 2019.

32. Miami Dolphins, 0-1 (32)

Make that three teams from the Sunshine State going dark at the bottom of our power rankings. The Dolphins might be one of the worst teams we've seen in a long time; no wonder players reportedtly want out of what might be an 0-16 express. To be honest, if we could rank them in the 100s, we would.
