Pittsburgh Steelers Season Preview
With or without Le'Veon Bell, the Pittsburgh Steelers will begin the 2018 NFL season and hope to qualify for the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season and improve upon their divisional round finish from 2017.
Bell, the Steelers' All-Pro running back, was tendered the franchise tag for the third consecutive season after he and the team failed to agree on a long-term extension this offseason. In the wake of that news, both player and his agent expressed their disappointment, and the latter said this would be his client's final season in Pittsburgh.
Since then, some have speculated as to whether Bell would consider sitting out with free agency on the horizon in 2019.
If Bell is on the sidelines come Week 1, the Steelers would be without one of the top offensive players in football when they open their season against the Cleveland Browns. Pittsburgh will travel to FirstEnergy Stadium to kick off its schedule, with a new quarterback under center for the Browns, whom specifically remains to be determined. The Browns traded for Tyrod Taylor from the Bills this offseason, and also drafted Baker Mayfield with the No. 1 overall pick. Either signal caller would be tested against a Steelers defense that ranked fifth against the pass in 2017.
From there, the Steelers will host the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 2, the team's home-opener, in what could be a big afternoon even if Bell is out of the lineup. The Steelers were third the NFL in passing offense in 2017, and could become even more pass-happy without the services of their workhorse running back. The Chiefs ranked 29th against the pass. They'll also have a new quarterback under center in Patrick Mahomes.
The Steelers and Ravens will write the latest chapter of their rivalry in Week 4 in the first of two divisional matchups, when Pittsburgh hosts Baltimore at Heinz Field. It remains to be seen if it will be Joe Flacco atop the Ravens depth chart, or if rookie Lamar Jackson will win the starting job. Pittsburgh will take on the Ravens in Baltimore in early November for Week 9.
Following that matchup, Pittsburgh will come off a short week when it plays Thursday night football against Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers. Pittsburgh will get 10 days before its next game, when it will get a chance at revenge when it takes on the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 10.
Other key matchups on the Steelers schedule include a Week 5 date with the Falcons, and a Week 15 date with the Patriots. Pittsburgh will close its season out at home December 30 against the Cincinnati Bengals.
