The 24-year-old safety, who will become an unrestricted free agent after the season, told SNY he hasn’t had any discussions with the team about a long-term extension. He said he does not want to play under the franchise tag in 2019.
"Honestly I don't want it," Collins said. "I know what type of player I am ... Why would I want to play under a one-year deal? If something happens I'm not guaranteed. And even though I'm guaranteed that for a year, I'm still not guaranteed."
But, Collins said he didn’t “have a choice” if the Giants decided to use the tag on him.
"It is what it is," Collins said. "If they franchise tag me I have to go from there. I can't go nowhere. There's not much I can do."
New York received offers for Collins before the trade deadline and may have been willing to deal him for a second- or third-round pick, according to an earlier report from SNY. He said he was “surprised” when he heard about the trade rumors.
"It was a big eye-opener,” Collins said. “If they're rebuilding, they can rebuild without me. And I'm so young still, but they could still try to find younger (players) and put the money elsewhere, into whatever they need to put it into to rebuild their team."
Collins, a two-time Pro Bowl player, has recorded 62 total tackles and four pass breakups in eight games in 2018.
The Giants head into their Week 10 matchup against the 49ers with a 1-7 record.
