With another NFL season coming to a close that saw some of the scariest injuries to date, a recent poll shows nearly 50 percent of American parents don't want their children playing football.
The poll, which was released by NBC News/Wall Street Journal, showed 48 percent of Americans say they would encourage their child to play a different sport other than football. The results were up eight points since the same question was asked four years ago.
The reason to discourage their children from playing the sport was due to concerns related to concussions, and understandably so.
According to the NFL's injury data from this season, the league experienced the most concussions it has seen in six seasons with 281 concussions in 2017.
The poll also showed that only 33 percent of Americans believe the league has taken meaningful action to reduce and prevent concussions. This number is down from 41 percent from 2014.
However, NFL Chief Medical Officer Allen Stills said on a conference call last month when the injury data was released that the league is taking action and is disappointed the concussion rate was up in 2017.
"We take this as a challenge, because we're not going to be satisfied until we drive that number much lower," Stills said, per NFL Network.
