The Panthers, for now, are at the top of the 2023 NFL Draft order.

They're picking first not by virtue of having the worst record in the NFL, but by acquiring the selection in a March trade with the Bears. The Panthers gave up the ninth and 61st picks in this year's draft, a first-round pick in 2024, a second-rounder in 2025 and wide receiver D.J. Moore for the opportunity to draft first. They're expected to take a quarterback, either Bryce Young or C.J. Stroud.

The Seahawks, Lions and Eagles are all picking in the top 10 and also later in the first round. The Dolphins, 49ers, Rams, Browns and Broncos no longer have first-round picks after trades or, in the Dolphins' case, NFL penalties. The Dolphins forfeited their first-round pick after the league determined they violated league policies regarding tampering. Miami reportedly attempted to hire Sean Payton and sign Tom Brady while both were still under contract to other teams.

There are 259 selections in this year's draft, down from 262 last season. The total includes 37 compensatory picks: seven in the third round, one in the fourth, 11 in the fifth, eight in the sixth and 10 in the seventh.

The draft begins Thursday, April 27, and will conclude Saturday, April 29.

NFL Draft order by round 2023

There are 259 selections in the 2023 NFL Draft. The total includes compensatory picks that were attached to the end of Rounds 3 through 7. The Texans forfeited their fifth-round pick for a 2020 salary-cap violation related to quarterback Deshaun Watson.

Compensatory picks are awarded to teams that lose free agents the prior offseason and satisfy the NFL's formula for compensation, and for having minority coaches and front-office executives hired by other clubs.
