Iowa State running back David Montgomery, projected to be among the best running backs potentially eligible for the 2019 NFL Draft, announced Monday that he is forgoing his senior year to turn pro.

“Cyclone Nation means the world to me,” he wrote, in part, on Twitter. “As I move on to the next chapter in my life to pursue my dream of playing in the NFL, I can only hope that I’ll be welcomed back to Iowa State with the same open arms that have always been there to embrace me.”

Montgomery, who rushed for more than 1,000 yards in each of the past two seasons, accounted for 3,507 combined yards over three seasons and scored 26 touchdowns as a workhorse in Iowa State's offense.

Analysts like his quickness and ability to catch the ball, which will drive up his draft value at a time when teams are considering running backs in the first and second rounds. At 5-11, 216 pounds, he is big and versatile enough to be considered an every-down back.
