The future for the Jets could be closer than we thought.

According to a report from ESPN.com, rookie quarterback Sam Darnold has a “very fair shot” to start Week 1 for New York against Detroit.

Darnold, who was drafted third overall in April’s NFL Draft, was expected to open the season behind Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater on the depth chart, but ESPN.com’s unidentified source claimed the 21-year-old out of USC is further along in his development than the team anticipated.

Darnold held out of camp until July 30 when he signed his rookie deal worth $30.2 million over four seasons.

Jets coach Todd Bowles has declared McCown the starter as the team starts the preseason Friday against the Falcons, but said that could change depending on how his three QBs perform in the four games prior to the season.
