Michael Badgley injury update: Chargers kicker (groin) out vs. Colts, report says image

Chargers kicker Michael Badgley will not play Sunday in the season opener after straining his right groin in practice, NFL Media reported Sunday morning.

Badgley suffered the injury in practice Friday and had been added to the injury report as questionable, but he was downgraded to doubtful on Saturday.

Punter Ty Long will handle kicking duties for the Chargers against the Colts. He has some experience in that role, having been the placekicker for the CFL's British Columbia Lions the past two years.

Backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor will serve as the holder for Long.

The 24-year-old Badgley entered this season as a consensus top-10 fantasy kicker. He scored 72 points in 10 games as a rookie last year, making 15 of 16 field goals.

He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Colts in 2018, but was waived by the team before the start of the season. The Chargers then signed him on Oct. 11 and he made his NFL debut in Week 6.
