Mac Jones injury update: Patriots QB (ankle) reportedly tells teammates he might play vs. Packers image

The way Mac Jones hopped off the field against the Ravens, it appeared he had sustained a major injury. When he was later diagnosed with a high ankle sprain, it certainly appeared an injured reserve stint could be forthcoming.

But the Patriots quarterback appears on track to avoid heading to the IR. In fact, he might even be starting next Sunday against the Packers.

According to the Boston Herald's Karen Guregian, Jones could be a game-time decision, and has told teammates he might be able to play against the Packers on Sunday.

Should Jones miss the game against the Packers, backup Brian Hoyer would start in his place.

WEEK 4 PICKS: Straight up | Against the spread

After the Week 3 loss to the Ravens, it was reported that Jones could miss several weeks due to his injury with a high-ankle sprain. On Wednesday, Bill Belichick was his usual cryptic self describing the injury, saying Jones was "day to day" 12 times, refusing to say what injury Jones had or how much time he might miss.

Guregian reported the severity of Jones' high ankle sprain "appears to have been overstated" and that the quarterback received multiple opinions on his injury.

The report also stated he has been encouraged by the latest opinions he has received.

It has been a slow start for Jones after finishing as the Offensive Rookie of the Year runner-up in 2021. Jones has thrown at least one interception in each of the first three games of the season, most recently being picked off three times against the Ravens in a 37-26 loss. He has completed 66 percent of his passes for 786 yards with a pair of touchdowns and five picks on the year.
