Leonard Fournette was a force at LSU, going down as one of the team's best players and biggest difference-makers in school history, recording 3,830 rushing yards over three seasons.
He's had a similar type of effect at times since joining the NFL, though his presence seems to have waned as of late.
Here's a look at what we should expect to see out of Fournette moving forward, how he's performed in the past, and why he was dubbed "Playoff Lenny":
Why Leonard Fournette is called "Playoff Lenny"
Fournette earned the nickname of "Playoff Lenny" for obvious reasons -- an abundance of success in the postseason. As that continued, Fournette's nickname rose to "Lombardi Lenny" after Fournette and the Buccaneers won a Super Bowl.
Since he was originally selected by the Jaguars with the No. 4 overall pick in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, he's had some clutch moments in the postseason, the same way he did in Baton Rouge as one of the best running backs in LSU history.
Fournette rushed for 242 yards with four touchdowns in three playoff games with the Jaguars in the 2017-18 season. His next postseason appearance came in 2020-21 with the Bucs, when he totaled 448 total yards and four TDs in four games, including 135 total yards and a TD in Tampa's 31-9 Super Bowl win over the Chiefs. That season, his yards per carry jumped from 3.8 in the regular season to 4.7 in the playoffs.
Fournette was released by the Bucs in March after three seasons as their workhorse running back after he showed some regression, finishing out the 2022 season with 668 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 189 carries.
Fournette played in 43 games with Tampa, tallying 3,057 total yards and 22 scores in the regular season and another 572 total yards and six TDs in six playoff games with the Bucs
What's next for "Playoff Lenny?"
Fournette signed with Buffalo ahead of Week 9 after remaining on the free-agent market for the first half of the season. He played just two games with the Bills, totaling just 40 yards, calling into question his role behind James Cook ahead of the playoffs.
The Bills will remain home as they face the visiting Steelers on Sunday in the wild-card round of the playoffs. With forgettable numbers posted so far in Buffalo, it will be interesting to see how much more Fournette can become involved and if he can reach peak "Playoff Lenny" status in Buffalo the way he did at the first two destinations of his NFL career.
Leonard Fournette playoff stats
Throughout his career, Fournette has totaled 152 carries for 604 yards with 10 touchdowns over nine playoff games.
Here's a look at the statistical breakdown of Fournette's performances over each year his teams have reached the playoffs. The Bills are the third team he's taken the field with beyond the regular season.
