Jordan Reed injury update: Redskins 'quite confident' tight end (concussion) will be back for opener image

The Redskins are optimistic about tight end Jordan Reed's availability next week.

According to ESPN.com, coach Jay Gruden expects his star tight end to be available for the team's Sept. 8 regular-season opener at Philadelphia.

Reed entered the concussion protocol after taking a shot to the head from Falcons safety Keanu Neal in Thursday's preseason win at Atlanta.

"We're quite confident that Jordan will be fine," Gruden said Monday.

A third-round selection of the Redskins in 2013, Reed has 329 receptions for 3,371 yards and 24 touchdowns in six seasons with the Redskins but has  appeared in only 65 games during that stretch.

He played in 13 games (eight starts) in 2018, recording 54 catches for 558 yards, both team highs, and two TDs. According to ESPN.com, his availability beginning with Week 1 is "good news for a team whose passing game revolves largely around Reed."

The Pro Bowl player has struggled with injuries throughout his career, but his latest head injury is concerning because it marks at least his fourth time in the concussion protocol.

The Redskins close out exhibition play Thursday against the Ravens before visiting the Eagles in Week 1.
