After the Jets selected USC quarterback Sam Darnold, 20, with the third overall pick in Thursday’s NFL Draft, McCown’s oldest daughter made him feel old when she told him his new backup (or successor) is young enough to be his child.

McCown, 38, is accustomed to being a stopgap QB in the NFL, so this situation in New York shouldn’t be an issue for him. He’s never been considered “the guy” for any of the eight teams he’s played for though he’s played in 95 games and made 73 starts since being picked in the third round of the 2002 draft.

Still, McCown is a great guy for Darnold to sit behind considering the elder statesman has proven productive enough to stay employed — which is more than the three QBs selected ahead of McCown in 2002 (David Carr, Joey Harrington and Patrick Ramsey) can say.
