San Francisco was one of the most dominant home teams in 2022. Turns out, not much has changed in 2023.
The 49ers put together an impressive performance on Thursday night, taking down the Giants 30-12 in the club's home opener to move to 3-0 on the year. It's the first time since 2019 that San Francisco has started a season with three wins in the first three weeks.
With the victory, the 49ers have now won 13 regular season games in a row, and quarterback Brock Purdy remains undefeated in the regular season, pushing his perfect record to 8-0 that dates back to last season.
Even without wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, the 49ers carved the Giants' defense up, converting on all five of their red zone trips. San Francisco had a firm control of the clock, nearly doubling New York in time of possession as the 49ers had the ball for 39:10 compared to the Giants' 20:50.
Christian McCaffrey was his typical dynamic self, accumulating 85 rushing yards and a score, while adding five catches for 34 yards in the passing game. Deebo Samuel hauled in six of his 12 targets for 129 yards and a touchdown as well, while Purdy finished the game with 310 passing yards and two touchdowns.
For New York, it was a tough day at the office against a suffocating San Francisco defense. Daniel Jones managed just 137 yards through the air, and the Saquon Barkley-less backfield managed just 29 yards on the ground.
While the 49ers improved to 3-0, the loss dropped the Giants to 1-2 on the year, leaving Brian Daboll's crew with many questions going forward, in particular about the offense.

Giants vs. 49ers updates, highlights from Thursday Night Football
Final: 49ers 30, Giants 12
11:25 p.m.: The 49ers roll over the Giants in their home opener and move to 3-0. A dominant showing from start to finish by San Francisco, as Kyle Shanahan's crew continues to look like the team to beat in the NFC. A better performance by the Giants, but there was never much of a pushback from New York. With the win, the 49ers have now won 13 consecutive regular season games.
11:21 p.m.: Three-and-out for Taylor and the Giants, and it's 49ers' ball. San Francisco can run the clock out now with New York out of timeouts.
11:18 p.m.: Jones' day is done. Tyrod Taylor comes in as the Giants wave the white flag in this one.
11:17 p.m.: The 49ers don't pick up the first down, but they do cause the Giants to use all three of their timeouts. New York get the ball back at the five-yard line with 3:25 to go.
11:13 p.m.: Interception! Jones tries to thread the needle to Waller over the middle on 3rd & long, but it hits Waller's hands, goes off Fred Warner's shoulder and into the mitts of Talanoa Hufanga for the pick. It's the first turnover of the game from either side, but now the 49ers can kill the clock with less than four minutes left.

11:09 p.m.: Things are getting chippy. Darius Slayton took exception to an extra shove from Dre Greenlaw and a small skirmish ensues. Greenlaw is called for unnecessary roughness as Charvarius Ward already had Slayton wrapped up on the play.
49ers 30, Giants 12
11:05 p.m.: Touchdown! The Giants elect to blitz, and it bites them, as Purdy finds Samuel 1 on 1 for a 27-yard touchdown. Samuel beat Jackson in man coverage, and a strong throw by Purdy to Samuel's back shoulder kept the ball away from the Giants defender. Moody's extra point is good, and the San Francisco lead is up 18 with 5:58 to go in the contest.

11:03 p.m.: After missing four plays, Samuel is back on the field. 49ers pick up a first down thanks to a two-yard completion to McCaffrey.
10:57 p.m.: Samuel continues to be a YAC machine, but it may have come at a cost. The 49ers wide receiver continues to drive up field with Giants defenders on him to pick up a gain of 18, but he goes down on the play. San Francisco is already shorthanded at wide receiver tonight with Aiyuk out.

10:51 p.m.: The 49ers come with pressure on 3rd & 11, Jones tries to find Waller but the tight end can't come up with the grab. A high-ish throw by Jones, but Waller got his fingers on it. It's another three-and-out for New York, as time is slowly ticking away for Brian Daboll's crew.
10:50 p.m.: Penalties are killing the Giants, mostly on defense but offense as well. The first play of this drive goes back 12 yards thanks a face mask call on New York guard Joshua Ezeudu.
49ers 23, Giants 12
10:46 p.m.: Field goal! Moody nails the 36-yard attempt for his third field goal of the game, and the 49ers take a two-possession lead early in the fourth quarter.
10:46 p.m.: Purdy's completion to Kittle on 3rd & 17 doesn't get enough yardage, and Moody will come out for his third field goal.
10:43 p.m.: A holding call on New York brings the ball into the red zone for San Francisco. It's the 49ers' fifth trip to the red zone, previously coming away with two touchdowns and two field goals.
End of third quarter: 49ers 20, Giants 12
10:40 p.m.: Kittle sends McKinney tumbling with a stiff arm and stays inbounds along the sidelines for a gain of 29 yards. The 49ers have the ball down to the Giants 23-yard line as the third quarter ends.

10:35 p.m.: After Kittle makes a eight-yard catch, Mitchell runs up the middle for the first down. The combination of McCaffrey and Mitchell have been carving up the Giants' front seven, as the two have already combined for over 100 yards.
10:32 p.m.: Purdy and the 49ers begin at their own 31-yard line with 2:13 left in the third.
10:27 p.m.: This 49ers defense once again comes through, forcing the Giants to another three-and-out. After holding San Francisco to a field goal the last drive, New York needed to make this drive matter, but instead, the offense quickly gives the ball right back.
49ers 20, Giants 12
10:23 p.m.: Field goal! Moody chips in from 23 yards out to give San Francisco three more points, extending their lead to eight with 4:08 left in the third.
10:22 p.m.: The Giants get pressure on Purdy on second and third down, forcing two incomplete passes by the 49ers. No flag on this play, so the 49ers will attempt a short field goal.
10:19 p.m.: Again, it's an incomplete pass by the 49ers on third down, but a flag is thrown on Kayvon Thibodeaux for illegal contact against Kittle. The Giants allow an automatic first down, and now the 49ers have 1st & goal.
10:16 p.m.: Purdy's pass on 3rd & 4 is too long for Samuel, but a flag for holding is called on Giants cornerback Darnay Holmes. The 49ers get an automatic first down and are set up at the Giants 24.
10:14 p.m.: Leonard Williams and D.J. Davidson combine to get to Purdy and record the second sack of the day for the Giants.
10:14 p.m.: Purdy hits Samuel on a crossing route, and the 49ers wide receiver does the rest, shacking off a number of tackles and gaining 35 yards on the play.

10:08 p.m.: Touchdown! New York needs just one play after the Lenoir PI to punch it in the end zone, as Breida barrels in for the score. The Giants go for a two-point conversion, but Bosa wraps up Jones before he could get the ball off. Nonetheless, New York takes advantage of excellent field position and gets in the end zone for the first time today. It's a one-possession game five minutes into the third quarter.

10:08 p.m.: Jones goes along the sidelines to try and find Waller, but Deommodore Lenoir brings down the Giants tight end and is called for pass interference. That moves the ball to the San Francisco 8-yard line.
10:03 p.m.: Shemar Jean-Charles makes contact with Gray on the return, Gray muffs the punt as a result and the 49ers recover. However, Gray had called for a fair catch, deeming Jean-Charles' contact illegal. The Giants start the drive with great field position, beginning at the San Francisco 37.
10:03 p.m.: The Giants' defense comes up big, forcing a three-and-out after an incomplete pass to Jennings, which would have been short anyway.
10 p.m.: A penalty on the punt pushes the 49ers back. They'll start their drive at their own 4-yard line.
9:58 p.m.: The offense for the Giants continue to struggle, as Jones just throws the ball away on third down to force a punt. The 49ers have been strong in their coverage and are getting pressure to Jones.
9:55 p.m.: Brightwell goes in motion and is wide open on the left side for the reception and first down.
9:54 p.m.: The kickoff is up, and the second half is underway. The Giants begin with the ball at their own 25.
Halftime: 49ers 17, Giants 6
9:38 p.m.: Purdy kneels down for a second time, and the first half comes to an end. Time of possession was dominated by the 49ers, with nearly twice as much possession control as the Giants, and San Francisco was able to get in the end zone twice, while New York settled for field goals. The Giants get the ball to start the second half.
9:37 p.m.: Trent Williams and A'Shawn Robinson get into a small scuffle as the 49ers try to kneel down and end the half. Flags are thrown, and it looks like we'll need one more play before the official end of the first half.

49ers 17, Giants 6
9:35 p.m.: Field goal! Gano splits the uprights on his 57-yard attempt to give the Giants three points with 13 seconds left. Points are points, but New York needs to get in the end zone to keep up with San Francisco.
9:34 p.m.: The 49ers get pressure to Jones, and his throw on 3rd & 3 is out of the reach of Isaiah Hodgins. Gano will come out for the 57-yard field goal attempt.
9:32 p.m.: The Giants are forced to use their final timeout with 25 seconds left after Campbell fell inbounds on his catch. New York is at the San Francisco 38 with no more timeouts.
9:31 p.m.: Darren Waller brings in a five-yard pass on 3rd & 2 to keep the Giants from a third consecutive three-and-out. The Giants are trying to get into field goal range for Gano with less than a minute to go in the half.
49ers 17, Giants 3
9:26 p.m.: Touchdown! McCaffrey scrambles in for the four-yard score for the second San Francisco touchdown of the contest. The San Francisco running back now has a touchdown in 12 consecutive games dating back to last season. The Williams penalty comes back to bite the Giants, and after the Moody extra point, the 49ers' lead is increased to 14 with 1:40 left in the half.

9:24 p.m.: Kittle gets 11.5 of the 12 yards needed on third down, but it doesn't matter as Leonard Williams is called for roughing the passer. An unnecessary play by the Giants defensive tackle that keeps the drive alive for the 49ers, and brings possession down to the New York 4-yard line.
9:19 p.m.: Two-minute warning in Santa Clara for the first half. San Francisco has a chance to extend its lead late in the half, as it's 2nd & 5 for the 49ers at the Giants 13-yard line.
9:18 p.m.: A very luck break for the 49ers keeps possession in their hands. Jackson breaks up a high pass to Samuel, the ball pops up in the air and hangs, but Bell brings it in for the catch. A big sigh of relief for Purdy, avoiding a potential interception.

9:15 p.m.: McCaffrey bounces to the outside on 3rd & 1 to convert for the first down. San Francisco is now 6 of 8 on third down conversions tonight.
9:11 p.m.: Gillian boots the ball down the San Francisco 27 as Ray-Ray McCloud III calls for the fair catch.
9:09 p.m.: Javon Hargrave wraps up Jones for a sack on 3rd & 2, and it's a second consecutive three-and-out for the Giants. The San Francisco defense hasn't budged at all the last two New York possessions, and Gillian is out for the punt.

9:03 p.m.: Touchdown! Purdy finds Ronnie Bell at the side of the end zone to give the 49ers their first TD of the game. The rookie WR out of Michigan got up to gain possession, and made sure to get both feet in for the score on his first NFL reception. Moody's extra point is good, and the 49ers take a seven-point lead with 7:49 left in the half.

8:55 p.m.: The 49ers continue to convert on third down, this time on 3rd & 15. Samuel takes a screen pass and races for a 30-yard gain to the New York 47. Trent Williams had an excellent block up field to open space for Samuel.

End of first quarter: 49ers 3, Giants 3
8:47 p.m.: Beware of Bosa. Nick Bosa records his first sack of the season, wrapping up Jones at the Giants' own two-yard line for a loss of eight. The 2022 Defensive Player of the Year nearly secured a safety for San Francisco, but the officials ruled Jones down before the end zone.

8:43 p.m.: On 3rd &8, the 49ers can't come up with a first down, as the completion to Jennings only goes for six yards. Mitch Wishnowsky comes out for his punt of the day.
8:42 p.m.: Purdy drops in a perfect pass to Kittle along the sidelines to pick up a first down for the 49ers on 2nd & 8.
49ers 3, Giants 3
8:37 p.m.: Field goal! The Giants answer right back, as Gano nails a 44-yard field goal to knot the game up at 3-3 with 3:18 to go in the first.
8:36 p.m.: New York can't come up with a third down conversion, as Jones' completion to Campbell only goes for one yard when they needed seven. Graham Gano comes out for the field goal attempt.
8:34 p.m.: Back-to-back completions to Parris Campbell and Gary Brightwell get the Giants down to the San Francisco 30-yard line.
8:33 p.m.: Needing one yard, Jones keeps it himself for the QB sneak and gets the yard he needed. The Giants are up to their own 48 yard line, close to crossing over into 49ers territory.
8:32 p.m.: The Giants convert their first third down of the game, as Daniel Jones hits Wan'Dale Robinson on a slant route to move the chains.
49ers 3, Giants 0
8:26 p.m.: Field goal! Jake Moody comes in for the chip shot, and sinks the 28-yard field goal to put the 49ers on the board. A solid first drive for San Francisco, but Purdy got away with two or three bad throws that were close to being intercepted.
8:25 p.m.: Purdy tries to find Samuel at the back of the end zone, but he under-throws the attempt and Samuel has to break up the play before Deonte Banks could intercept it. Fourth down coming up for the 49ers, and they'll go for a field goal.

Pregame
7:58 p.m.: The Giants' defense has been awful to start this year, allowing an average of 34 points so far in 2023. That does not bode well going against a 49ers' offense that has scored at least 30 points in eight consecutive regular season games.
7:50 p.m.: 49ers QB Brock Purdy has an unbeaten streak on the line tonight. The second-year signal caller is a perfect 7-0 in the regular season dating back to last year when he took over the starting job for the injured Jimmy Garoppolo. His only loss so far in his NFL career was the NFC Championship loss to the Eagles, one in which Purdy was hurt on the first drive of the game and removed from the contest.

6:45 p.m.: Tonight is the home opener for San Francisco, one of eight games this year that will be played at Levi's Stadium. In 2022, the 49ers went an impressive 8-1 on home turf, tying the Giants and Vikings for the best home record in the league.
6:35 p.m.: The biggest thing to watch for the Giants is the start of their game. The first six quarters of their season were dreadful, putting up zero points until the second half of the Week 2 win over the Cardinals. New York was able to overcome the hole against Arizona, but San Francisco is an entirely different beast, considered one of the deepest units in the league and one of, if not the best team right now in football.
6:15 p.m.: It's been three years since the 49ers and Giants have played one another. The last game came in 2020, with San Francisco pounding New York 36-9. The 49ers quarterback for that contest was Nick Mullens, who threw for 343 yards and a touchdown, while Giants QB Daniel Jones completed just over 50% of his passes for 179 yards, no touchdowns and an interception.
6 p.m.: The 49ers likely will be without one of their wide receiver weapons. Brandon Aiyuk is not expected to play Thursday night after being listed as questionable. The San Francisco wideout has been dealing with a shoulder injury.
49ers’ WR Brandon Aiyuk, listed as questionable for tonight’s game due to a shoulder injury, is not expected to play vs. the Giants, per league source.
