Fantasy Football PPR WR Rankings

Fantasy Football PPR WR Rankings image

Fantasy football is all about points, and PPR leagues allow players to score more points -- no matter how exciting or unexciting the reception. Because there are plenty of unexciting wide receivers out there, you know our WR PPR rankings -- along with draft strategy and sleeper/bust projections -- are going to be at least a little different than those in our standard league cheat sheet.

There’s a classic lens to view PPR leagues through: Patriots WR Julian Edelman. He’s the prototypical, underneath route runner who may never attempt a go-route all season but will get open for his QB time and time again. Each time he catches a four-yard slant is an extra point (or half-point) for the savvy PPR owners who drafted him.

Another usual PPR suspect is Jarvis Landry, although his role might shift with Odell Beckham, Jr. joining him in Cleveland. The guys that gain the most in PPR often operate out of the slot, such as Golden Tate or Taylor Gabriel. Deep-route runners, like Allen Robinson and Tyler Lockett, lose value in PPR formats.

Draft strategy doesn’t change a whole lot in the broad scope of things, though. When it’s time to pick a receiver, there are the slight shifts mentioned above that might make one wideout the better option. But running backs and tight ends are also benefiting from a point for every catch (while QBs gain nothing), so the cross-positional value -- like how many players at a position you draft or when you draft them -- changes less than the rankings at an individual position might.

One thing that’s important in PPR leagues is opportunity. If a receiver is on the field and a team likes to pass, no matter how bad the QB, there’s a chance at fantasy relevance. Former NFL receiver Davone Bess was the king of the seven-catch, 41-yard type of game. In a standard league, those numbers are practically worthless, but they have at least some value in PPR.

So, in general, these rankings don’t deviate a ton from our standard wideout chart, but there are guys who get a boost simply because they get more targets. That can be overvalued -- after all, touchdowns and yards are worth the same amount -- but it definitely matters.

We'll continue to update these rankings until the season opener on Sept. 5, so check back for updates. For individual player analysis, go here.
