Eagles coach Doug Pederson is hoping to know by Friday who his starting quarterback will be Week 1 against the Falcons.

Last year's starting quarterback Carson Wentz suffered a serious knee injury late last year, forcing him to miss Philadelphia's Super Bowl-winning playoff run. He has been back at practice in recent weeks, but has not competed in preseason games.

Wentz, 25, completed 60.2 percent of his passes last season for 3,296 yards, 33 touchdowns and just seven interceptions. He also had 299 rushing yards on 64 attempts.

Should Wentz prove unable to play next Thursday, Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles would start under center. Though Foles stepped in admirably during last season's playoff run, Pederson was displeased with his performance in a 5-0 loss to the Browns last week.

Foles went 13 of 17 in that game for 127 yards and two interceptions. The Eagles are 0-3 in the preseason.

The defending Super Bowl champions are also waiting on the injury status of starting running back Jay Ajayi, who has missed practice due to a lower-leg issue, and wide receiver Alshon Jeffery, who is still recovering from rotator cuff surgery in February.
