Is DeVonta Smith playing this week? Injury update, fantasy outlook for Eagles' WR ahead of Week 4 vs. Buccaneers image

While the Eagles pulled off a 15-12 win over the Saints in Week 3, they lost one of their top offensive weapons to an injury in the process.

After taking a big hit while already wrapped up by multiple Saints defenders, WR DeVonta Smith left the game in the fourth quarter and didn't return.

Smith's status for Week 4 has been in question since then, with the Eagles also dealing with various other injuries in their wide receiver room.

Here's what to know about Smith's status in Week 4 vs. the Buccaneers, how Philadelphia's receiving depth chart looks and Smith's fantasy outlook moving forward.

Will DeVonta Smith play this week? Injury update on Eagles WR

Smith will not play in Week 4 due to a concussion he sustained in Week 3 vs. New Orleans. The team officially ruled Smith inactive for the contest Sunday.

The injury came on a helmet-to-helmet play, and Smith remained on the field for some time afterward. He was eventually brought to the medical tent and locker room for tests, and was ruled out for the rest of the game.

Saints defensive tackle Khristian Boyd was later fined for his hit on Smith.

While the Eagles walked away with a win, Smith's teammates, including DB C.J. Gardner-Johnson, expressed their anger toward the play that left the receiver injured.

While Smith will remain sidelined with his concussion for Philadelphia's Week 4 matchup with Tampa Bay, he'll have extra time to recover with the Eagles having a Week 5 bye.

When the Eagles face the Browns in Week 6, the hope is that Smith will be healthy enough to return to action.

Eagles WR depth chart

Even outside of Smith, Jalen Hurts' options in the Eagles' wide receiver room are dwindling entering Week 4.

Here's a look at Philadelphia's depth chart at the position ahead of its matchup with the Buccaneers.

RankPlayer (injury status)
1A.J. Brown (out)
2DeVonta Smith (out)
3Jahan Dotson
4Britain Covey (IR)
5Parris Campbell
6Johnny Wilson

No. 1: A.J. Brown

Along with Smith, Brown will not play vs. Tampa Bay in Week 4, leaving Hurts without his top two wide receivers.

Brown has been dealing with a hamstring injury that's now left him out of three-straight games. However, when he's on the field, Brown is one of the NFL's top talents. In Week 1, he had 119 yards and a touchdown, and last season, he totaled 1,456 yards and seven touchdowns.

No. 2: DeVonta Smith

While Smith won't play in Week 4 against the Buccaneers, he's a model of consistency at his position when healthy.

In each of his first three games this season, Smith finished with exactly seven catches and at least 76 receiving yards. With he and Brown sidelined, Hurts will likely be turning toward RB Saquon Barkley and TE Dallas Goedert much more often, but he'll also be giving the Eagles' receiving depth pieces more opportunities.

No. 3: Jahan Dotson

Dotson was a late-offseason addition for Philadelphia, coming over from Washington in a trade. A change in scenery was ideal for Dotson, who hadn't produced at the elite level many were hopeful for with the Commanders over two seasons.

Through Week 3, Dotson hasn't seen much action with just three receptions. However, Hurts may be calling his number a lot more in Week 4 with Philadelphia's offense currently beat up.

No. 4: Britain Covey

Covey will not play in Week 4 after being placed on IR by the Eagles after last week's win. He'll be getting surgery on his shoulder, which is estimated to keep him out around six weeks.

It's another unfortunate injury for Philadelphia's receiving room, especially after Covey started to step up over the past two weeks. Against the Falcons in Week 2, he had six catches for 23 yards.

With three of Hurts' top WR options — Brown, Smith and Covey — all out vs. the Buccaneers, the Eagles brought in some reinforcements.

No. 5: Parris Campbell

Campbell was elevated from the Eagles' practice squad alongside the speedy John Ross ahead of Week 4, offering the team more depth at the position.

Campbell spent his first four NFL seasons with the Colts and had a career-high 623 receiving yards in 2022. Against the Saints last week, Campbell had two catches for 13 yards, and there's a solid chance he starts alongside Dotson in Week 4.

No. 6: Johnny Wilson

While the previously mentioned Ross is another option in the Eagles' receiving room, Wilson, a rookie, will likely earn more playing time this week.

A sixth-round pick in April's NFL Draft, Wilson made his first reception in the league in Philadelphia's Week 3 win.

DeVonta Smith fantasy outlook Week 4

Smith is out due to a concussion in Week 4 vs. Tampa Bay, so make sure to remove him from your fantasy lineups. For now, turn to another receiver on your bench to fill Smith's starting spot or look toward the waiver wire.

Dotson is an option that'll be directly filling Smith's shoes and could be Philadelphia's top wideout on Sunday. However, names like the Falcons' Darnell Mooney, the Chargers' Quentin Johnston, the Packers' Romeo Doubs and the Patriots' DeMario Douglas are also some of the top options available on the waiver wire in most leagues.

Because Smith and the Eagles have a bye in Week 5, he should remain on fantasy benches next week as well. However, when Philadelphia returns to action in Week 6 vs. Cleveland, Smith should be started due to his talent and consistency, assuming he's healthy and back on the field.
