The Cowboys are very close to reaching an extension with quarterback Dak Prescott.
How close? Team owner Jerry Jones told reporters Sunday a deal is "imminent."
“Oh, yes, I do know that we’ll get it done,” Jones said (via ProFootballTalk). “It would probably be fair to say it’ll be done on a imminent basis. Imminent. Without being real clear, bright lined. It’s not done. What’s imminent? Well, days. Days. Or something like that.”
Jones was in high spirits Sunday after the Cowboys' 35-17 win over the Giants. And no one was more instrumental in that win than Prescott, who completed 25 of 32 passes for 405 yards and four touchdowns. That gave him the first perfect passer rating (158.3) in Cowboys history, a feat unmatched by any of the team's great QBs, from Roger Staubach to Troy Aikman to Tony Romo.
As The Dallas Morning News noted in a post-game report, "The price for Dak Prescott just went up."
That exact price is still to be determined, of course. Negotiations with Prescott appeared to hit a snag in August, after reports the quarterback had turned down a $30 million per year offer from the team, and was seeking a record $40 million per season. A subsequent report shot down that $40 million figure as false.
But the two sides apparently have been edging closer to common ground in recent days. Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones told a Dallas radio station Friday he hoped to have a deal in place before the Giants game.
That didn't happen. Now Jerry Jones is saying a deal is "days" away and "imminent."
When informed of the Cowboys owner's comments after the game, Prescott said he's not thinking about his contract talks.
“I’m turning the page and I’m worried about the Washington Redskins,” Prescott said, referring to Dallas' Week 2 opponent. “I have people that handle that. My focus is on this team, on the football game. I think as long as I can keep continuing to do that, this will do things like we did tonight. As I said, that’s been out of my focus for the past week, and I told you guys that.”
