Cam Newton injury update: Panthers quarterback (foot) hurt in first game back from shoulder surgery image

This is less than ideal for Cam Newton and the Panthers.

The quarterback was removed from the Panthers' matchup with the Patriots on Thursday with a foot injury, the team announced.

He was sacked twice before being taken out of the game.

Newton getting hurt is not a good thing for Carolina, but what is especially frustrating here is this was his first game back after offseason shoulder surgery.

He didn't even make it out of the first half in a game that has no bearing on the outcome of the season.

It is unclear the severity of Newton's foot injury.

The 30-year-old threw for 3,395 yards with 24 touchdowns and 13 interceptions last season.

Kyle Allen is the team's backup quarterback but the Panthers also drafted Will Grier out of West Virginia this year so they have options if Newton misses any real time.
