The Buccaneers have released running back Charles Sims with an injury settlement, the team announced.

Sims had previously been placed on injured reserve on Aug. 24 after suffering a knee injury during the Bucs' second preseason game. A third-round draft pick in 2014, Sims played four seasons for the Buccaneers but two were cut in half by injuries.

Once considered a starting candidate, Sims had 529 yards on 107 carries in 2015. He also hauled in 51 receptions for 561 yards and four touchdowns that season.

The Buccaneers drafted USC product Ronald Jones II in the second round of this year's draft, and Peyton Barber established himself as a solid between the tackles runner last season.

Sims was not a lock to make the 53-man roster to start the regular season even before the injury, but the settlement hints he was a strong candidate for playing time.
