Blake Bortles was a late Patriots touchdown away from playing in this week's Super Bowl, but instead he's resting.

Not only is Bortles not playing, he underwent surgery Friday on this throwing wrist, according to ESPN.com. The report also stated that Bortles had been dealing with the injury since December 2016, but the Jaguars elected to have him skip surgery last offseason.

Bortles completed 60.2 percent of his passes last season for 3,687 yards and 21 touchdowns. The Jaguars picked up his fifth-year option last offseason, meaning he's owed $19 million next season, but many have questioned whether or not Jacksonville will keep its former top-5 pick.

Bortles was a frequent member on the injury report this season, but did not miss a practice and started every game.

Though Bortles is expected to make a full recovery, it seems unlikely the Jaguars will work on a long-term deal with him this offseason.
