Bills vs. Patriots score, results: Buffalo dishes out two decades worth of revenge image

For two decades, the Bills have been on the receiving end of butt whoopings at the hands of the Patriots. But Buffalo got some much-desired national TV revenge over its AFC East nemesis with a 38-9 shellacking over New England at Gillette Stadium on "Monday Night Football."

The Bills completed the regular season sweep over the Patriots for the first time since 1999 — the year before Bill Belichick and Tom Brady joined forces in New England. The 29-point defeat marks the worst home loss of Belichick's career.

Leading the way for Buffalo was third-year QB Josh Allen, who added another stellar peformance to his breakout season. Allen completed 27 of 36 passes (75 percent) for 320 yards and four touchdowns, pushing his season total to a franchise-record 34 passing TDs, edging out Jim Kelly's previous record of 33 in 1991.

Much of Allen's maturation can be attributed to the addition of Stefon Diggs, who has arguably been the best receiver in the NFL this season. Diggs hauled in nine catches for 145 yards and three TDs, and is now the NFL's leader in receptions (120) and receiving yards (1,459).

Monday night's game started off with the teams exchanging field goals on opening possessions to end the first quarter tied at 3-3. Buffalo went ahead early in the second quarter on a 5-yard TD run by Zack Moss, but New England answered right back as Cam Newton escaped the pocket and scrambled for a 9-yard TD to make it 10-9.

From that point on, it was all Bills. Buffalo went on to score four unanswered TDs as the Patriots struggled to move the ball the rest of the night.

Cam Newton (5-of-10 passing, 34 yards) was benched midway through the third quarter in favor of Jarett Stidham, who wasn't much better. Stidham completed 4 of 11 passes for 44 yards.

The Bills (12-3) can now lock up the No. 2 seed in the AFC with either a win or a Steelers loss to the Colts in Week 17.

The Patriots (6-9) were already eliminated from postseason contention following their Week 15 loss to the Dolphins, but with tonight's loss they are now guaranteed to finish the season with a losing record for the first time since Tom Brady's rookie season in 1999.

9:12 p.m. — TOUCHDOWN, BILLS.  Josh Allen finds Lee Smith for a wide open TD from 4 yards out. Buffalo leads 17-9 with 5:32 left to play in the first half.

Both QBs have had some impressive runs tonight. Allen scrambled for the first here on this 11-yard gain on third down.

9:00 p.m. — TOUCHDOWN, PATRIOTS.  A nice answer for New England as Cam Newton somehow escapes the pressure and rumbles into the end zone for a 9-yard score. Folk misses the PAT, so Buffalo still leads, 10-9 with 10:39 remaining in the second quarter.

8:50 p.m. — TOUCHDOWN, BILLS.  Zack Moss punches it in from 5 yards out and Buffalo takes the lead, 10-3 with 14:50 left in the second quarter.

The Bills were able to extend the drive with this sneaky fake punt as Jaquan Johnson, the upback, completed a pass for the first down.

8:35 p.m. — Patriots punt.  Three and out for New England on its second possession and the Bills will get the ball back at their 30-yard line with 5:18 left in the first quarter.

8:30 p.m. — FIELD GOAL, BILLS.  Buffalo gets into the red zone but New England comes up with the stop to hold them to a 22-yard field goal attempt. Tyler Bass connects to tie it up at 3-3 with 6:43 remaining in the first quarter.

8:19 p.m. — FIELD GOAL, PATRIOTS.  New England missed out on a big trick play as Damierre Byrd dropped a perfect pass from Cam Newton, so it'll settle for a 45-yard field goal from Nick Folk to take a 3-0 lead with 12:44 left in the first quarter.

8:15 p.m. — Bills win the toss.  They'll defer and the Patriots will receive to start the game.
