We mentioned it plenty in our betting preview for this game: Tagovailoa endured one of the worst games of his career when these teams last met in mid-December. He completed just 10-of-28 passes for 145 yards and a TD. Now he draws the Chargers in a much-anticipated Week 1 opener against a defense that's much healthier than it was last season? Bad juju for Tua.
Tua's home/road splits show a clear issue with his confidence and ability away from Hard Rock. Just take a look:

Now consider that Miami ranks just 20th on PFF's offensive line rankings and must now contend with not just Joey Bosa but also Khalil Mack, a pass-rushing tandem that has racked up a combined 11 Pro Bowls, three All-Pros, a DPOY, and a DROY. That kind of volatility on the other side of a suspect line doesn't exactly fill us with Fins-related confidence.
Tagovailoa failed to hit 269 passing yards five times last season, and three of those games were on the road. It's hard to bet against someone with Tua's upside, we get it, but with a banged-up running back corps and an unreliable o-line, we're happy to take that leap. 2. Tyreek Hill, WR, Dolphins — UNDER 86.5 receiving yards (4/5 confidence)
We're lumping Tua's UNDER with Hill's because their success tends to go hand-in-hand. When these teams last met, Hill broke away for a 60-yard catch-and-run into the end zone and recovered a fumble in the end zone for a second score. So, if we're defensive coordinator Derrick Ansley, we're spending a ton of game prep trying to figure out how to contain this guy.
Hill's biggest weapons, of course, are his legs and his downfield receiving chops. If Joey Bosa and Khalil Mack have their way on the front lines, Tua won't have enough time to find Hill blazing down the field. We're confident with the UNDER here, especially with Bolts' stud defensive backs J.C. Jackson, Asante Samuel Jr., and Derwin James all healthy.
3. Justin Herbert, QB, Chargers — OVER 293.5 passing yards (3.5/5 confidence)
Herbert historically gets off to hot starts each season, averaging 321.5 passing yards per game in his first two contests of each season since he entered the league in 2020. His career per-game average across September: 313.5 yards. So, we expect at least a 300-yard performance from the 25-year-old this Sunday afternoon.
The Dolphins added stud cornerback Jalen Ramsey in the offseason and immediately entered the discussion of "best cornerback tandem in the NFL." However, Ramsey (knee) is starting the season on IR, and it's unlikely to be completely fixed in Week 1 against an elite offense. Miami allowed the fifth-most passing yards per game last season and the third-most passing yards per away game. Herbert's going to get his.

4. Austin Ekeler, RB, Chargers — OVER 35.5 receiving yards (3/5 confidence)
Of course, if Herbert does get into any trouble with tight outside coverage, he will have stud pass-catching back Ekeler to turn to in the short-passing and screen games. Ek has become one of the best dual-purpose RBs in the game not named Christian McCaffrey, and he exceeded 35.5 receiving yards a whopping 12 times last season.
One of those times was against Miami, who let him catch all eight of his targets for 59 yards last December. And wouldn't you know, the Dolphins ranked among the bottom eight in the league in both catches (93) and receiving yards (700) surrendered to running backs. Ekeler feasts, the Chargers win, and we close out Sunday afternoon with big, chili-cheese smiles on our faces.
