Bears-Panthers trade details: No. 1 draft choice headed to Carolina for D.J. Moore, haul of picks image

The Panthers are now on the clock.

With six weeks still remaining until the 2023 NFL Draft, Carolina acquired the No. 1 overall pick from the Bears in a blockbuster deal that could shake up the league for years to come.

The Panthers under owner David Tepper have been itching to make a splash and add a franchise quarterback; they've made their biggest move yet to get one. The only question is which quarterback will become the new face of the franchise.

MORE TRADE ANALYSIS:

Alabama's Bryce Young and Ohio State's C.J. Stroud are the favorites to be drafted first overall, but Florida's Anthony Richardson and Kentucky's Will Levis have both heard their name surface in No. 1 pick speculation. Now that we know who will be making the selection, it might not be long until a true front-runner emerges.

The Bears, meanwhile, are officially committed to Justin Fields and will use the assets acquired in Friday's deal to help build a strong roster around him.

Here are the full details of the blockbuster trade between the Panthers and Bears.

Panthers-Bears trade details

Panthers receive

  • 2023 No. 1 pick

Bears receive

  • 2023 No. 9 pick
  • 2023 No. 61 pick
  • 2024 1st-round pick
  • 2025 2nd-round pick
  • WR D.J. Moore

While it's rare to see this kind of deal so far out from draft night, it's not hard to see why the Bears agreed to it. Along with four picks in the top two rounds, Chicago landed a potential No. 1 receiver for Fields in Moore.

Moore has posted three 1,000-yard receiving seasons in his career and is heading into his Age 26 season. He remained productive even as the Panthers shuffled through subpar quarterbacks in recent years, and he'll be a major part of what the Bears do on offense next season as Fields continues to develop as a passer.

The loss of Moore means that whichever quarterback the Panthers draft might be starved for weapons as a rookie. The top receivers on Carolina's roster following the deal are Terrace Marshall Jr. and Laviska Shenault.

This year's free-agent class of receivers is considered weak, and the Panthers have fewer assets to trade after this deal. If the No. 1 pick turns out to be the long-term face of the franchise for Carolina, however, the huge haul will be worthwhile.

Bears general manager Ryan Poles now has an extra pick in each of the next three drafts as he aims to rebuild the team around Fields. Chicago finished 3-14 in 2022 but played many close games while its second-year quarterback showed improvement.

Here's an updated list of picks for both teams in April's draft.

Panthers 2023 draft picks

The Panthers are down to six picks in the 2023 NFL Draft, though they're all inside the top 150. Offense could be the focus for the Day 2 and Day 3 picks after a young quarterback to build around goes No. 1.
