Fresh off of an impressive prime-time win over the Rams on Monday night, the 49ers head across the country to take on a Panthers team that has struggled out of the gate during the 2022 NFL season.
Defense has been the calling card for San Francisco, which spells doom for Carolina. After limiting the Rams to just nine points on Monday, the Niners' stingy defense is allowing league lows in points allowed per game (11.5), yards per carry (2.87), yards per play (3.81) and is tied with the Bills for first in fewest yards allowed per game (234.5).
On the opposite end of the spectrum are the Panthers, who rank last in yards per game (262.3) and last in first downs (56) through their first four games. This season, Carolina's talented defense has done its part in the beginning stages of games, but the sputtering offense's inability to stay on the field for sustained drives has resulted in the defense wearing down and eventually breaking down as games progress.
Tensions are high in Carolina, as boo-birds rang out during the Panthers' 26-16 loss to the Cardinals in which Baker Mayfield threw two interceptions and Arizona's time of possession (38:35) nearly doubled that of Carolina's (21:25). All eyes are on Panthers head coach Matt Rhule, who is now 1-3 on the season and 11-26 overall, including a staggering 1-26 record when the team allows 17 or more points.

With second-year 49ers quarterback Trey Lance out for the season, this will be the third start of the season for Jimmy Garoppolo, who leads a San Francisco offense that features the otherworldly Deebo Samuel. An offense featuring Samuel is an offense that is not easily limited, so the 17-point threshold will again likely be put to the test.

Factor in San Francisco's defensive prowess and Carolina will have its work cut out to avoid a 1-4 start to the season.
