Quarterback Jack Coan has earned Wisconsin's starting job.
Coan began preseason camp as the team's only quarterback to have previously started a college game, and his experience helped move him into that role for the 2019 season.
The junior has started four games and played in 11 for the Badgers.
“I thought he improved in a lot of different (areas),” coach Paul Chryst said, via the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “Understanding certainly what we are doing. His command of the offense. His drop, footwork … he made some strides there. I thought the whole group had a really good camp.
“And those of you who were there, every rep he got this camp was with the (starters). He’s got a better understanding of himself, of our offense, of what teams are doing. I like the progress he has made.”
Coan became the team's most veteran signal-caller after Alex Hornibrook transferred to Florida State.
Last season, Coan replaced Hornibrook under center after the latter went down with an injury. Coan completed 56 of his 93 attempts for 515 yards and five touchdowns while throwing three interceptions through five games (four starts).
Freshman Graham Mertz and redshirt freshman Chase Wolf are both listed as the No. 2 quarterbacks on the team's depth chart, which was released Sunday.
