"There is still a great deal that I want this team to accomplish and I look forward to helping lead us to success in 2018," Grier said in a statement. "I am completely focused and looking forward to building off the success we had this year and want to do even greater things next year. West Virginia is my home, and I couldn't be more excited about the future here."
Grier, who sat out the 2016 season after transferring from Florida, led the Mountaineers to a 7-5 record in 2017, including 5-4 in Big 12 play. He passed for 3,490 yards and 34 touchdowns to only 12 interceptions. He did so while completing 250 of his 388 passes (64.4 percent) and had a quarterback rating of 162.7. He threw for more than 300 yards in all but two games in which he played, and had at least two touchdowns in all but one.
Grier ranked 25th nationally in completion percentage, 15th in passing yards, ninth in QBR and seventh in touchdowns thrown.
"Will's decision to return next year certainly makes it a great day for West Virginia football," WVU coach Dana Holgorsen said. "He is a great leader for our program, and I know our fans enjoy watching his talents on the football field. His teammates and the coaching staff are certainly looking forward to his return, and this is positive news for all involved."
