Notre Dame starting running back Jafar Armstrong is expected to miss "extended time" with a groin injury he suffered in the team's season-opening win over Louisville, The Athletic first reported Wednesday.
The report noted Armstrong could be out "up to two months, with a five-week layoff" being the optimistic timeline.
Should that timeframe stick, Armstrong could be ready to return Oct. 5 against Bowling Green. A two-month recovery, on the other hand, would push his comeback to Nov. 2 against Virginia Tech.
Fighting Irish coach Brian Kelly confirmed Armstrong underwent further testing and evaluation Tuesday.
"Felt some discomfort in the groin, ab area," Kelly told reporters, per NBC Sports. "He’s had a sports hernia injury that was repaired in high school, so we feel good that there was no structural damage. We need obviously to examine further."
Armstrong, a junior, had 383 yards rushing for seven touchdowns while adding 14 receptions for 159 yards last season, despite missing three games due to a severe knee infection.
Notre Dame's will next host New Mexico on Sept. 14.
